Rupp's 2 mile record should be under dispute...Illegal coaching

Yelling is one thing...giving splits is another. There is one designated person to give splits to the athletes at a pre-determined point. And the coach of one of the athletes cannot be that person.

You are obviously not a meet official in reality. The games committee is at liberty to make their own boundaries. For instance, at UW, there is no non competition area. Everyone has to be on the infield. Most non championship meets allow coaches on the infield. Go check the grassy knoll again, you're time will be better served there.

100s of them and coaches are not allowed on the infield to give individual splits.

My point was that actually there ARE coaches all over the place yelling out splits to their athletes. That's like the primary thing that happens at indoor meets.

Yeah, usually these coaches are not on the infield because usually there are field events going on. But no one is ever concerned with where the coaches go, so long as they don't stand in the middle of an ongoing event.

I am not a fan of Rupp, but if this is an official rule it's one of the most commonly broken ones. Almost up there with "traveling" in the NBA.

BS! I have been going to Millrose since the 1990s and meets like Sunkist before that and many of the Armory meets recently and as I've mentioned before Dempsey and coaches give splits at these meets. There's no way you can count "100s" of meets that keep people from calling infield splits. I have personally called splits at Millrose and I am a nobody... just happened to have a guy running there.

There's a difference between coaching and just yelling/cheering, whatever. It's fine line, but- a simple cheer, looking good, etc is fine. Relax your arms, is not fine.

Yep, this is really all that needs to be said. The rule says that the coach must be warned. If the coach wasn't warned, there can be no disqualification.

What the f*** is wrong with our sport if a coach is prohibited from coaching?

I just watched a few seconds of the race. At 5:39 in the race ALSAL is yelling out splits as RUPP runs by the large clock. Does RUPP have eye issues???

Wow, its like some of you guys WANT American running to suck. We complain about African Imports, and now that we have a bona fide, born and bred, white guy running world class times, we're trying to write them off because his coach was on the infield of a small indoor meet and 20 seconds ahead of the next competitor?

Why does our sport have all the pessimists?

But what I would like to contribute is that the demand of this thread to take away Rupp's time is inconsistent with the amount of wrong done in the violation itself. You're telling me that YOU would not count Rupp's amazing effort because of something he (he being Rupp) can't control, AND that has very little if anything to do with his success anyway.

For, how much control does Rupp have over his coach going on the infield and yelling at him? None. Don't argue it. Coaches are by nature doing stuff without the athletes approval- because they're the coach/boss. Furthermore the idea that Rupp is supposed to be worrying about silly unenforced rules while he runs enough to tell his coach to stop yelling at him while he runs a record is ridiculous.

Even if the violation was an unfair advantage to Rupp, which lets be fair, its not, its still not Rupps action- its his coach's behavior which is in question. Punish the coach when he goes wrong, not the athlete.

How you gonna deny the athlete's hard work and even post something like this.

You must not run because you have no respect for the amount of success that depended on Galen Rupps effort- and not his coach yelling at him.

It's petty and you're being petty. You're better than that.

We have new records from HS to professional in the 1500, 2-mile, 5k, 10k and marathon. They dusted the runners of the 1980’s who said they couldn’t do it. That’s why those guys did not become the coaches of 2012.

Don't worry, the US runners will show up in London and make a lot of noise.
