Post-Collegiate training groups

For sponorships and potential travel etc:

BRC-Adidas team has a nice incentive-style set up, though they're not a unified training group.

For training group enviroment, particullarly longer distances:

Hudson Training Systems tops this list, he did just have three in the top 13 at the Trials, all with PRs. Easily the best marathon-oriented group in Colorado (with a roster that includes Cabada, Carney, Rizzo, McCandless, Briney, Benita Willis, Tera Moody etc). Local sponsorships included (Boulder Sports & Med, something like that?), though most athletes are individually sponsored. Based in Boulder-Denver area.

American Distance Project would be second on the list. Training philisophy of Renato Canova & Scott Simmons. Still getting off the ground in terms in sponorships, but the group is highly active and elite-bound (a handfull of sub-elite/up-and-comers recently raced in the Trials) Based out of Colorado Springs.

You're right its intense! Are post collegiate runners looking for less intense? Maybe they are, it never occurred to me until you just said that. This is something that should be thought about when considering a post collegiate team. If you are looking for a less intense training program, Stotan isn't the place for you. For that matter, though, neither would be any of the teams who (1) end up, or (2) have already done, anything special. Take it one step further. All great runners and great programs in the world are intense. If you are looking for something softer and without intensity, yes, Stotan Racing isn't the place. And they won't want you if you are looking for softer and less intense. SR is looking for the durable and strong, who can train intelligently first, and hard when needed.

Does Stotan provide housing?

I would doubt that you're actually on this team. Any serious post-collegiate runner (in this Stotan group or elsewhere) is not giving his/her program HJs on letsrun.

No housing provided. Stotan is set up differently than other groups. We feel that working a part time job or continuing on with graduate school within the region makes you a more dedicated runner, but it is not for everyone. It also keeps you connected with the real world. For the post collegiate runner not yet racing at the elite level (sub 3:55 in the mile, low 13:20's or faster in the 5k, mid 27:00s in the 10k, sub 63:00 in the half, and sub 2:12 in the marathon) this factor is important. All SR runners work part or full time jobs (20-40 hrs per week) or are going to grad school. Some are engineers, some are life guards at the YMCA. They all pay for their own apartments. All athletes are making it work, and able to train to the max. Arises set up a training program and training schedule for each individual. If living in dorm rooms or old frat houses as an adult is what you want, without any responsibility, no Stotan. If a runner earns a Nike contract (Maegan Krifchin) based on results, the amount of time devoted to a job may lessen (if it will improve training). Marathon group is about five men and two women. Distance group is about three men and one woman.

No, instead they're receiving free housing with other adult runners, "living the dream", training soft, afraid of intensity, and not making it past a few years, either because they were cut for having relationships with team members like children, or because they couldn't improve, only to find that they have put their real lives on hold and never reached their potential. Without a job, a dime, or fulfillment, to show for it.

That link offers a list but no comparison, which is one of the things that the OP asked for. Your post does not offer any value. The purpose of the board is for runners to request / provide insight from / to other runners. You have failed at this. Please allow other to have that discussion. Thank You.

Details? How about some examples of "coaching on another level" or an explanation of how the Aris' are "always ahead on everything?" I'm not asking for you to give away the secret winning lottery numbers, but let's hear some examples or cut the hyperbole.

This is a sport where many are more than willing to share workouts yet it's rare to hear any specifics coming from the Stotan world. Canova will give out day by day workouts and he's argubly as good as anyone in the world right now yet so many others feel the need to keep secrets. I don't get it.

I don't think Mammoth has free housing unless you're talking about when they go down to Chula Vista. McMillan gets stipends on housing I believe.

Good discussion, keep the posts coming. I have to admit that there are a handful or so clubs on this thread that I have never heard of before, and I think I do a pretty good job of keeping up with all the talk on letsrun, flotrack, etc. I think it's a problem when you have 13:50-14:10 guys coming out of college and thinking they have a shot at post-collegiate running, but don't quite understand how many options they really have to continue running at an elite level. Take a guy like Mercado for example, who really wasn't sure he would continue running after college until he got hooked up with McMillan. With talented guys like him questioning their future in the sport at 22 or 23 years old, it's no wonder that we can't keep up with the Kenyans on the senior level at least in terms of depth and consistency.

Please don't let any group tell you that housing, and health insurance is not important. I was hurt and received achilles surgery while continuing to work on my Masters degree. I could not have afforded to do either if I was working a full time job to pay the rent.

If a program is not ready to pay your rent and health insurance, they are not yet ready to be a "training center". Funding is number 1 if you are not good enough to sign a big shoe deal upon graduation.

Youre only example is achilles surgery. If you train right you won't need to pay for it. americans are weak. Need evreything given to them rather than going to get it themselves. Who h got the free shtuff?!?!? get real people. Only path to the top is challenging yourself. Not making it easier on yourself. Thank God I was raised In Aus.

Ok, the problem here is you are using hard and intense as synonyms and I was not. I work extremely hard and I would expect any post collegiate team's training to be hard. I'm not looking for a "soft" program. I would be looking for a program that uses intelligent training principles to develop runners over the long term while keeping them healthy.

There are plenty of "make or break" programs where the intensity is very high and you either survive the program and get huge improvements very fast or you are the 90% who burn out and fall apart. A lot of college programs do this because when it comes down to it they only need 5 guys to perform well. From what I've seen, Hansons-Brooks training is very hard (100-140 mile/week blocks of training) but I wouldn't necessarily call it intense. I've heard Stotan falls closer to the "make or break" variety.

Maybe I've been misinformed. Could you tell us what a typical week or two block of training would look like for your team?
