Once you have met the standards to join your country's Olympic team then have become an Olympian. You are now on an Olympic team. The 1980 Moscow qualifiers are Olympians, despite the fact they didn't compete.
Just like people who have been accepted into NASA's astronaut program are officially "astronauts," regardless of whether they have flown into orbit or not.
Thank you for allowing me to clear this up for you.
Of course they are NOT Olympians (from that Olympics anyway) - the USA chose not to attend/compete, and that is part of the price that the athletes had to pay, anything else is just progaganda BS. The 1980 OT was a farce - call it a national championship if you like, but it was a trials for nothing. I would have had more sympathy if the entire Olympics that year had been cancelled (for whatever reason), and then called them Olympians after the fact. Having said that, the 3 boycott Olympics (1976 - African nations; 1980 - North America and allies; 1984 - Communist countries)were all watered down to varying degrees anyway. 1988 was the first "good" Olympics since 1972 (and that one was marred by the Israeli massacre).
