Fagan comes clean on his positive EPO test

This is despicable that he is being defended in Ireland when Cathal Lombard was thrown to the dogs. Just becuase he was friendlier with the top runners does he mean he should get different treatment. No druggie comes out and tells the truth first time. Too many flaws in what he was saying in that article.

1500iu 3xweek is not standard protocol. that wont get you much in terms of a hematocrit lift. 3000-5000iu 3x week is standard. That means he had 4weeks (vials were probably 3000iu). In med journals it says about a 1% crit raise for every 9000iu. Reading around would have given him that information. So maybe all he wanted was to get caught or be able to get more in the future to keep his london dream alive.

Vinny is a friend of Fagan i think but not that close like Keith Kelly. Possibly the most anti drugs person from what I hear which makes this contradictory. Supposedely likes to be linked to good runners and idolises Keith Kelly to the point of copying his hobbies and opinions.

you are assuming that he wasn't micro dosing to avoid getting caught. Which if had read around is probably what he was doing. His loading phase more than likely happened a long time ago. Microdosing is the way to go these days.

Yup. Every single one of them. I don't believe his story one bit nor do I feel sorry for him. This is like Johns being caught on that show Cops. They all swear this is their absolute first time with the woman or worst.

EPO is old school, UV blood treatment is in.

So was he taking EPO Boost?

FULL DISCLAIMER: I am in now way defending PED users.

The sad reality is that when we talk about drug-cheats and how they are looking for an easy way of winning we are most certainly lying to ourselves. In many ways doping is not taking a short-cut, it is a path towards even more training, allowing the athlete to train even more. Without even getting into the depressive spiral that being a high level athlete can cause, we need to be serious as a culture when we talk about cheating and winning. By labelling PED's as being cheating we are ignoring the reality that most of these drugs work by allowing the athlete to train harder, more often or with less rest. If your boss came into your office and said I want you to work harder and longer but I am going to pay you more and give you better perks and move you up in the organization you probably would not consider it cheating but a rewards for increased work. I am almost sure that is how a lot of users justify their drug use to themselves. Far from seeing it as cheating, they see it as a ticket to working harder and not breaking down.

In Fagan's case, and many other athlete's who are not nationally or international celebrities, there is also the tremendous mental strain of knowing that the amount of financial security you have is directly related to your performance levels. Most national teams only support those who are winning thus the pressure on those athletes who are on the margins is increased by degrees of magnitude.

I just think we need to be mature about this and realize that the use and issues surrounding PED's is more complex than some after school special. Fagan's story is an example of this.

Lets assume you're a racist trying to distract from the connections between a small fry doper and the big fish Abdi, because Abdi's skin color. Am I right in thinking Abdi also used to train a lot with "Mr. B sample" Lagat as well?

What makes this situation different is that he admitted to the doping right after testing positive. He didn't wait for the B sample, didn't lawyer up, didn't take it to the courts. He knew what he was doing was wrong, he wanted to get caught. It is sad to think that these guys are in so much debt and so dependent on results to live. I can empathize with him, if you knew the only way to continue to earn a living (he couldnt get a job over here anyway) was to supplement your already grueling workout and training schedule with some drugs, would you not do it? Hopefully now he can get the help with the mental issues he needs.

You are out of your mind. No one owed Martin Fagan a salary just for running, or performance money. He could have done the honorable thing (like Ryan Bak, for example, or all of the Hanson's runners).

We don't know and never will know what Fagan was thinking. What we do know is that he cheated. Zero tolerance is zero tolerance, even for white guys with cool accents and a bunch of tatoos.

You know this opens up a whole new proven trend: Almost all synthetic drug users have experimented with another form of destruction whether that be overdosing on the current or moving onto something dangerous there have been many cases of mistreated ADD prescriptions-Ritalin, Adderal have the same street cred. as crack you cannot come across a synthetic prescription without 5 chapters of side effects. It just seems the doctors have been blinded by the treatment and have been reduced to a script, or even drug dealer.

The good doctors will acknowledge that prescriptions are a true crutch and alter the body's own ability. If you remember Adam Goucher when he was on antidep. and saying it was so hard to recover. Martin's synthetic drug toxication combined with his heavy training all had contributions to his state of misjudged mind and ability, resulting in an ignorant decision to take EPO.

Mr Tibbs read a whole lot more into that comment than was actually there - makes wonder who he is . . .
