I think most folks called this well in advance, citing that Mo would either make the team or DNF. No surprise here at all. Will he ever finish a marathon? Of course. But I really see Mo's racing philosophy similar to Deriba Merga: Win or drop out. A PR can be set in practice.

Well he coulda picked up $15K for being top 5. He may have been able to hang on another hour and picked up some decent loot. Prize money went 10 deep with at least $4K. But maybe he shot his wad in the first half and knew he wouldn't even place top 10?
Another thing to consider is if you make a habit out of DNFs, it can make it pretty hard to get sponsors or invites.
Trafeh is simply not a smart racer in the marathon. He can get away with a very fast pace and hold on for dear life in a half marathon but obviously not a full.

Nope. That would take away the luster of the marathon being the longest footrace (which is already isn't, but no one cares about race-walking).
However, I think a time based race could work. I'd love to see a 24hour race in the Olympics. It's got a lengthy history and deserves wider recognition.
