Livestrong expose in Outside magazine

I'm getting a Livestrong ad on this page. Maybe the ads should filter for context.

No offense but your "novel" idea and your "research" sound like garbage. You are clearly not a scientist or a researcher if your idea of a study is working with a few cancer survivors at the local Y. Let me guess you "novel" idea involves Yoga maybe and some special supplements (maybe vitamin D)?I am sure every cancer foundation gets approached a million times by quacks and backyard scientists who are just sure that they have solved cancer. exactly. Outside magazine has put lance on their cover dozens of times over the years. they profited off of using his image to sell magazines and now they will try to profit some more by tearing down his image. that's what passes for "journalism" these days - cult of personality on the way up and way down.

Outside Magazine is the whiniest wad of journalism ever to hit the newsstand. This piece is a perfect example of the envy and pure jealousy that weenie nerds who grow up to be journalists feel towards bad ass athletes. it's the only way they will ever "get back" at them for getting their nose bloodied in the PE dodge ball games at elementary school.

The writer (and most of the posters here) just don't get what Livestrong does. All the knocks on awareness and survivor support are really 180 degrees off the mark. Cancer research is already adequately funded but many among us are operating under the assumption that we can "cure" cancer and allow everyone to live forever. The message of livestong and "It's Not About The Bike" is summed up with "oh shit, I didn't die. Cancer didn't kill me, now what do I do?" Put yourself in that situation with all the emotion this question involves for yourself, your kids, your family, your friends. Very few organizations have been designed to help answer that question.

Livestrong is that organization, and I think you'd be surprised at the continued support if Lance is ever brought down.

Tyler Hamilton's went on record about the bullying behaviour in a certain Aspen restaurant, after which the Armstrong crew got remarkably silent in general.

Don't understimate what the services of "enterprise-grade" counselors like

can do in damage-control.

The story is NOT one of shabby journalism. The story is about long-time critics being awarded the space for a balanced journalism.

Although reading (as a foreigner) the political posts here in this forum and the linked political articles one gets the impression that you americans are not exactly supporters of balance -- but rather pursuing extremist stances and mud-slinging. By these standards Mr. Armstrong still gets preferential VIP treatment fo sure.

I read it and also did not find that it produced anything particularly damning.

I would still say that he and his foundation have done a LOT more to help others than 99.999% of other athletes or celebrities. Has it also helped Lance become more famous and rich? Sure.

And did he use PED's? Yes. And did virtually every other top cyclist during his era also use PED's ? Yes.

Somehow when I add all of that up, while I no longer find a "hero", but I also don't find someone evil or worse than Hitler, which is how many seem to want to paint him these days.

Problem is when you deny, deny, deny, with such righteous indignation there's no way down off the cliff.

Think of Roger Clemens and his retrial. Does anyone really care? What a shameful waste of taxpayer money. No one wins. Both sides look like a**holes.

Say what you want about Lance, it's nearly impossible to name a sports superstar who has behaved like a bigger a**hole to the press.

He makes Barry Bonds seem like Tim Tebow.

My perceptions about runners have really changed. Seems they all are hate filled jealous pathetic losers. Either that or the actual runners aren't the ones posting on this thread and it's just the washed up has beens who can no longer run and have more time to spew their opinions and hate.

The general public doesn't care who used roids any more than they care who won the last big game. Most just listen to the biased media and believe whatever propaganda they want to spew at a certain time even if it is nowhere near the truth.

Happens in all sports.

Because dying of cancer, or even having it, is a horrible thing. And people who have never been affected by it watched someone really suffer from it really don't have a clue what that means. Waking up every day not knowing how much longer you'll be alive. Wondering if you'll see your next birthday. Imagining your kids growing up without out. Your wife. Dying all too young. Being robbed of so much you were promised by life. Scared every time something aches, hurts, or, you get a cough. Losing things, like running, walking, getting out of bed, the ability to stand, that you take for granted.

All resonable people have realized that "AWARENESS" coupled with NOT funding research PLUS creative accounting does not deserve fanboyish defense.
