Why didn't webb run faster in the 800 in high school?

3'53.43 with various open 400s :

48.75 ->1'46.8 , 2'17.2 , 3'35.9 , 4'57.4 , 7'46.3

48.50 ->1'46.5 , 2'17.0 , 3'35.8 , 4'57.6 , 7'47.1

48.25 ->1'46.3 , 2'16.7 , 3'35.8 , 4'57.8 , 7'48.0

48.00 ->1'46.0 , 2'16.5 , 3'35.7 , 4'58.0 , 7'48.8

considering the mile was probably fairly uneven ( no pacers ), i'm sure you coud clip something off above

i'd say easily low-1'46 back then & mid/high-2'16

what is american junior 1k record ?

i do reckon that if ryun had been running on '70s synthetics in HS in '65, they mighta invited him onto pro circuit as a "guest" in this era ( like eugene meet )

i'd be not surprised at all if he'd put these on the board whilst in HS :

'65 - 18y - 1'43/3'30

'66 - 19y - 1'42-low/3'28

'67 - 20y - 1'41-flat/3'25

i'm sure webb, despite being a great athlete woudn't claim to be in same class either in HS or pro

the 2 mile was an official HS event beginning the 1965 track season - so Ryun would have been a senior when it was included in the mix. Read somewhere that he ran a 9:04 (HS) and 4:04 double (Golden West Invite)

Completely untrue. The "deuce" was a very big deal in high school track in the 60s

When it comes to times, Americans only care about the mile. The 800 is just a race.

personally, i'd reckon the 800wr is still at least 1/4s shy of equivalence of the 1500 ( & that is 13y ole ! )
