Thanks for the link Flagpole. Interesting to read an article from 1978.
Words like "retarded" just aren't found in magazine articles these days.
I think that was the generally accepted term until a few years ago. But seriously, I think the thing that strikes me most is that it's Bill Rodgers in People Magazine! Can you imagine Ryan Hall in People? (Forgive me if there's been an article about him or some other marathoner, I'm not a faithful People Magazine reader.)
So he just ran it. I don't have splits from anyone nor know how it went, just got text saying he ran 5:20.73 from an onlooker.
just got splits 79, 2:40, 4:03, and 5:20

I'd say 5:20 but it's gonna be ugly, like 70, 80, 90, 80
Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
How good did he feel after?
UPDATE: He has had 1 cigarette in the past 4 days and has also run 3 miles (un-timed) each of those 4 days. He is trying to get his health back on track and will have another go at the mile time trial for a sub 5 attempt.
He will go for this attempt in 10 business days.

Not much exercise as far as I can tell. Occasionally he goes out for a 2 mile run but that's it. He hasn't put on an ounce either.
Do you know if he does HIIT or Crossfit at all? That would make a big difference in my opinion of his performance.
DNF, heart attack

He has been doing push ups and abs after every run!
The cigarettes probably helped him. They kept his weight down. If he'd gained 20 pounds he couldn't have broken six.
Good thread.

A lot of the early runners up until 1960 did smoke regularly. Didn't think a thing about it.
