How does Wetmore do it?

I also want to point you guys back to my original post. I didn't say he NEVER recruits guys like that. I said he prefers them some of the time (or at least that's how it seems). I think if you showed him a guy who ran 50mpw and 15:30 throughout highschool and a 100mpw guy that ran 14:55, he'd probably be just as pleased with the 15:30 guy.

Steven Weeks, Kevin Williams, and Andrew Roberts are just a few names that Wetmore didn't recruit too heavily even though they were superstars in Colorado.

So do you know the status of Connor Winter? Redshirt? Injured?

Men a bit higher than forecast, although the LetsRun Poll has them 3rd. On the other hand, the women were picked 4th and finished 11th (right behind Stanford, which under-performs except for When Tegen took the reigns and a few other times including a blow-out win bigger than all but UTEP's)

Connor is fine and running pretty good. Was not going to be in top 5, so was not really needed for cross so red shirted. No sense in wasting eligibility. He has lofty goals for track season. Slowly building up mileage, around 65/ I think it is.

Really think it's as simple as that. He also recruits pretty intelligently. Prefers kids that run a lot slower on 40mpw than FL top ten guys who run 70-100 in HS. Didn't even try to recruit some of the top CO guys a couple years back because he didn't think their room for improvement was high.

You're only telling part of the story. The mileage volume his kids take on is extremely high - 120-140mpw at peak. Many fall out, but the ones that survive are hardcore and can compete with just about anybody. Those my friends, are the cold, hard facts.

A combination of altitude, mileage and longer sustained tempo-steady state type runs. Most runners at this stage of development can progress very well with increases in mileage and mostly strength based training, ecspecially when training for the 10k.

Add in the benefit derived from the altitude and Wetmore's instinct on when and what to do training-wise and you have a good formula for success.

Wetmore doesn't generally make first contact with any recruit. If you have an interest in his team you have to be the one to send him an email. Wetmore doesn't want someone whose ego is so big that they feel they are too good to send a short email of interest to him. Most, if not all, the runners on the team recruited themselves to Wetmore, showing him how much they wanted to be at CU.

With that said, now that Nelson is in charge of recruiting they are much more active in making first contact with good runners, although a lot depends on scholarship availability, transfers, etc.

Dude I'm calling BS. This is a straight LIE. I know a lot of kids at CU past and present, and the highest mileage kid was 130. The next highest was 115. then a bunch around 90-105, and a second bunch of kids (the injury prone ones) around 75-90. SO pretty much like any other competitive program.

The kids who got injured were the kids who were always injured, every other season. They would run low miles and still get injured with tentative training plans, no speed work, no track work, just easy running on soft surfaces. Same injury rates as any other program. What your saying is so far off the mark. Not many fall out. The vast majority perform. Look at CU's recruiting classes for the past 8 years and look at their NCAA performance record the past 8 years. Simple.

This is part of his mystique. Other interesting things about his recruiting- to contact him you must leave a note for him in a brown paper bag behind the athletics building. Make sure you aren't followed!! Once contact is made, never look him in the eye. That is only for people on the team. The rules of CU recruitment are:

Rule #1: Don't talk about CU recruiting.

Rule #2: DON"T TALK ABOUT CU RECRUITING!!!

Not sure if Wetmore does or doesn't recruit high mileage high schoolers but If he doesn't, V6 does have a point. These high mileage high schoolers more often than not do not often live up to expectations in college. I mean cmon if you are doing 100 mpw in high school, what do in college what do you do to improve in college?????

By the way for who ever asked earlier in this thread, about Connor Winter who won the Colorado State 800, 1600 and 3200 his junior and senior years on 60 or so mpw! ; he is doing fine. That is correct he wasn't going to make the varsity this year, however Conner really isnt a long distance 10k guy (at this point anyway). His real talent lies on the shorter speedier track distances. Kind of like a Stephen Pifer type runner. Im really excited to see what he does this spring.

I would bet Wetmore is like most coaches they are recruiting everyone they can. Most coaches are very good at reading the kids, and after a few contacts will be focusing only on those kids that they think they can bring in.

As far as training goes all you do is read the book, and it pretty much explains alot of what they do. High mileage, with hard runs, run at altitude. Strong survive.

Forget about recruiting or performance over the season.

Wetmore's teams almost always peak just when he wants them to.

right on the first part, wrong on the second part. this is my problem with RWTB. all these people read it and think they know everything about CU and the program. Only the strong survive. myths and garbage from know it alls.

Your post is myth and garbage. I am currently reading that book again and it is happening just like it did the last time I read it. Wetmore never changes and the runners run a lot. How do you explain that, batman?

In my opinion, because he leaves a ton of the shorter interval stuff until later in the season. Easier to control a peak when you extend your base mileage and tempo workouts as far as possible and only start to do the turnover-intensive stuff very late and not throughout.
