Yeah. Solinsky and Bairu come off looking really petty. Craven offered a fairly balanced piece about enjoying the college cross country experience, and didn't seem to put anyone down (let alone drag them through the mud).

Simon & Chris are hardly over-reacting. You are reading the article AFTER the offensive quote was taken out. On Simon's FB page Craven defends himself and said he stands by the quote but then less than 3 hours later takes it out. Pretty gutless on Craven for putting it in there in the first place and then defending himself while at the same time pulling the quote out.

To somebody reading the article now, it seems like Bairu and Solinsky are being petty but if you read it earlier(with the quote) it was basically a cheap shot at Schumacher

These guys are defending Schumacher with cult-like fervor. Craven really did not write anything too offensive. I didn't see the quote, but he simply was comparing two different styles, and hinted that a more relaxed approach might be the best way to go for college kids. Craven suggests that a tense coach might be bad for athletes that already are feeling nervous and tense. Both coaches are shown respect.
The former Badgers are getting a little too worked up over this.

So what was the point of this aricle written by Craven? Just to give kudos to Mick Byrne? Right. He could have done that without needing to put down Schumacher.
I don't blame those guys being pissed at a former teammate. And I mean FORMER. He may think he's a Badger for life, but keep up trashing his former coach and he might as well be blackballed. And that goes for any reception he every gets from the guys down the road if he ever shows up for any reunion at Wisconsin.
They take this stuff serious at the programs that honor tradition. He broke the cardinal rule.
Older people could relate this exactly to when Jim Bouton wrote a book called "Ball Four". A great book, by the way, that slightly revealed character flaws of Mickey Mantle that the press kept hidden. Bouton was hated fromn that day by his formal teammates who shunned him when they went on toi manage and coach and Bouton was a television commentator.
Craven may turn out to be a good writer but if he has an axe to grind and does it this way, he can expect not to be considered part of "inner circle".
Those guys however could have shown maturity and not responded but that't the world we live in with all the facebook and twitter crap. Everybody thinks they have to put put out every thought and feeling to the whole world.

In his time at Flotrack, Craven hasn't demonstrated that he's a good writer, or has anything particularly intelligent or insightful about track. Jerry was the one who tried to keep us humble and hungry heading into them, not too wound up. Maybe we were too loose thinking it would be easy. I would argue that a team must have a sense of tension and focus going in to not take the field for granted. I would also say that our shortcomings in 2006 was my fault as I abandoned a team strategy given to me by Jerry to pursue my own individual glory. Don't publicly blame Jerry for these. I guess you would have to have competed for a program like Wisconsin or Arkansas to understand how this looks bad and is frowned upon. Its about loyalty. Those programs take this seriously.
He ran for Shumacher and has the right of free speech to do whatever he wants. If he wants to dog Jerry publicly, he has that right. The other's rightfully can be pissed.
His opinion is his own. He makes some claims that since Mick Byrne is loose and can relax, whereas Jerry is more animated and high srung, that Wisconsin is a better prepared team now.
Again, when you come out and criticize a former coach (one that was HIGHLY successful), you either have a personal problem with the guy or your own career.
His only incentive was to write something that looked provocative, and when you do that you better be ready to take the heat.
The other guys could have took the high road but I respect their loyalty to their coach.

Formatting aside, I suppose Jerry made a crack about other coaches. Solinksky also says something about coaches at a bar, and Jerry not going to drink with them.

I watched the Badgers before the race in 2004 that they blew. And I saw Jerry joking and laughing with the team like the kid he still is while they were warming up and stretching. They ran about as good as they had all year and a very good team edged them out. Three guys went for the win. One of them won and the other two tied up near the end and lost about 10 points they shouldn't have if they had run within themselves a little more.
There is always a pressure cooker situation at Wisconsin or any team from the start of practice when you have the legit goal every year of winning it all. Mainly for the guys at 5-9 who are in a dogfight every practice to make that championship contending team. Craven was one of those guys so maybe mainly he's reflecting his own inner pressure and blaiming it on Jerry's style.
Arguing over facebook, about someone voicing negative opinions about your running coach is foolish.
They all need to grow up, get real jobs, join the real word, and finally realize that this is not something worth caring about, even for just a moment.
