Alan Webb still with Nike or so it seems...

Considering I saw Alan training with 400m sprinters as far back as 2001 I wasn't surprised to find out today he isn't in Oregon anymore to get away from the long distance runners.

I personally didn't like being a long distance runner running my workouts with sprinters and middle distance guys when I was in college.

Could Alan Webb resemble that once great .350 hitter that is now holding on as a .270 hitter based on past accomplishments? In many ways Webb is the Derek Jeter of Mile running.

Each year since 2007 the Webb camp promises times in the 3:30 range and the best we see are times in the 3;35-3:38 range.

I think the poster is referring to Nike medallists Lashawn Merrit, Bryan Clay, and Tyson Gay. Unless I'm mistaken he/she was getting at the fact that Nike doesn't have a lot of distanct running medalists to send to the meets - he posted in response to Tuscon AZ's question about why there weren't more Nike medallists to send to these xc meets. Of course there are Flanagan and Goucher as the poster mentioned and Rowbury as someone else mentioned. Although the pro-lineup doesn't include any women so Lagat appears to be Nike's only distance medallist to send. Hope this helps.

That's assuming Webb goes the 1500 and not the 5000, but the same issue exists there.

I agree but the only one on that list that i see being a real threat to webb is centro. i have said it many times that wheating, being so new to track, will burn out on the type of consistent training needed to run sub 3:35 and manzano and lomong are no shoe ins to be in 3:35 shape at the trials either. don't forget webb had to deal with lagat for 3-4 years and he will not be in the 1500 this time around. the pressure will be on webb to perform but if he has been healthy for a year or more out and training consistently i don't see anyone touching him at the trials. i could see him running a 3:33 solo in the final leaving everyone in his wake, ala 2004.

Not sure about Merrit and Clay, but Gay is an adidas man.

Good Call w/ Gay. Checking usatf.org ... confirms that Clay and Merrit are Nike. But regardless - Bernard appears to be the only US male distance medallist that Nike has. Not shocking considering the quantity of US distance medallists there are in total - but the reality of it sucks. Bernard is so track oriented too - hasn't raced cross since college probably (although not positive).

Perhaps Centro will sign with Nike after college and double their distance medallists.
