he should enjoy his honeymoon and take his rest. this was a terrific performance. He translated his 13:20/27:46 ability very ably to a tough marathon debut. He has the talent to break 2:10 on a flat course. He will not have too many years to do it. If he doesn't rest, he'll be fatigued and not make the team anyway. The fact is that he is in a difficult position. Three weeks out and it's late November and he has two months at most to train. But he will be at a higher level in his training in the next cycle, and maybe he can run a very good spring marathon.

i also think mary wittenberg and nyrr deserve recognition. i don't have any idea what they paid ed to have him in the race, but i'm reasonably confidant that what they paid him exceeded the objective economic value that he added to the nyc marathon (in terms of his name/presence adding to tv fees, number of entrants, advertising fees, etc). as a fan of american distance runners in general, and ed moran in particular, i'm grateful that mary and the nyrr use some of the revenue from this race to support dedicated and promising runners like ed.

i'm struggling to figure out how you think what i wrote indicated that i think ed brought added revenue to the event. i said the exact opposite - that's the point of me saying that mary and nyrr deserve recognition for paying him an appearance fee (and again, i have no knowledge of what they paid him; i assume it was greater than $0).

in any event, the point really is that he ran a great race.

YES! I said a couple months ago that Curtis should target sub-2:10 for NYC and try to get into the sub-2:09:00 area in a fast marathon (perhaps one year from now in chicago?). Most people were really underestimating his chances and saying that a "good debut" would be 2:13-14. Malmo especially. Now I understand that your 10k/5k prowess (which was 13:18/27:24) is not proof that you will excel at the marathon, but if you look at it in reverse and look at all the guys with sub-2:11 PRs ... the majority of them have serious ability at 5k/10k.

Anyway, I want to point out that while my hopes did not pan out for Curtis, I don't think that it means he will forever be a mediocre marathoner. If he can train like he has been consistently (110 mpw) he should not only be better at 10k, but he is more likely to fulfill (what I believe is) his potential in the marathon. i have not looked at his splits, so I don't know if he was ever on a fast pace, but I think his future is bright since he ran 27:33 in '10 and 27:24 in '11. If he runs four of them and never breaks 2:10 I will concede that he is one those who just cannot cultivate endurance. If you look at his training I think he had way too few runs longer than 7 miles ... this time.

Also, I don't think someone like Fleshman will ever run well at the distance. She is too big at 130 lbs. Shit, in HS I was 5'9" and 125 ... sometimes 120 and I am male.

BAck the the point: Moran has run 13:20-13:25 most of the last 6 years. And he ran 27:52 and 27:43 before. Over history there have been a LOT of great marathon runners with distance PRs on par with this (or slower). John Treacy, Charlie Spedding, DeCastella, Steve Jones. These guys all went 2:08-2:09 about 20 times between all of them.

Why is it a surprise when someone who is as fast as Frank Shorter on the track goes 2:11:46?

Nice job Ed Moran. You did 5X better than Fleshman with 100 TIMES less fanfare.

Sorry, kaitainen, I misread your post. I must be tired from getting up at five a.m. yesterday, running the marathon and flying back home the same day.

Running is not his means of support, he has a very strong Business degree and his wife makes a very good living. Money for running has to be nice but money is not the reason he does it. Maybe people should stop being selfish and saying "he should do what I'd like to see" and try saying "I hope he does xxx, but if he doesn't he certainly would have his reasons."

Can't for the life of me understand why a woman would want to deprive the love of her life the HOUR it takes for a 10 mile run. They probably go to the bathroom together too. Yikes.

Huh? Everyone is not a marathoner. Curtis had the profile of someone whose body isn't meant to run the marathon. He had no real experience running longer than 10k, nor did it appear that he had a natural affinity towards the marathon training mode. When he did run a race longer than 10k -- the half marathon at Philly -- despite perfect conditions and a very competitive field, he only ran 1:01:50. For a 27:25 10k runner this is a major downturn in his performance profile.

I thought that 2:12 to 2:14 would be an outstanding debut for a guy with his performance profile.

As it were, the conditions at this years NYC Marathon were perfect. One in 15-20 years perfect. Curtis showed is respect for the marathon by running the first half very conservatively, 1:05:30 or so, showing that he respected the marathon, and had a rational plan for his race.

He exploded badly.

A runner who explodes that bad while going out as draggin-your-feet slow as he did probably has no upside in the event.

You really don't understand the marathon at all. To break 2:11 you do not have to have serious 5k/10k ability.

It is strange how people fill in the blanks and assume that his wife is controlling. A married man's number one vocation is his marriage. Running would be more of a career than a vocation and lower in priority. I think a man who is thinking straight, knows what is important in life, and truly loves his wife, would 100% want to take time off from running after a marathon and hang out with his wife. Family is more important than fame, recognition, money, and power. Perhaps it is not to those who have a hardness of heart and can no longer feel the warmth that comes from a tender smile. That warmth is more real and significant than the shallow feelings of pride that come from winning an Olympic medal. I'd rather have a great marriage than a gold medal.

Strange that people criticize Meb for running a marathon so close to the trials and then criticize Moran for deciding not to run the trials. If he ran the trials he'd be on a short training cycle with not much margin for recovery, and then be in a pretty bad spot if he didn't make the team.

Hey buddy, what is your job? On your honeymoon how much work did you do? It can't have been that hard to call into the office or check emails for a few hours a day, right?

Ed Moran is a PRO RUNNER who just spent quite a few months months busting his a$$ getting ready for a huge race that he did extremely well at. I think he can take some time away on his freaking HONEYMOON.

I fully assume he planned the wedding/honeymoon to work with his plan to run NYC. This bodes quite well for his running. He just ran a 2:11. The guy put in a real deal effort. He needs to recover. It's awesome that he planned his honeymoon to happen while he doesn't need to be out running. His wife was cool to go along with it all. They're doing fine. Congratulations to them both.

He really does have to re-evaluate things, but Houston is probably just too soon. He can't expect his body to feel good enough to do a real workout in probably 3 weeks and he won't have had any consistent running to back it up. So maybe by December he can put in two or three race-specific workouts, but without the necessary mileage. He certainly can't run his best marathon at the trials. The question is whether not even his best might get him good enough for 3rd, though, because then he'd have ample time to prepare for the actual Olympics.

If you're reading, Ed, I say go for a payday at Boston or a time in London or Rotterdam. That's a great opportunity to capitalize on runners skipping those races in preparation for the Olympics and you deserve to see your career do well thanks to this effort.
