I dont like the steeple either, but it's been run for years on the international level and it's on the Olympic schedule of t&f events.

Ultras or Muddy Buddy or whatever are just silly events that someone has come up with since US runners distance struggle in major marathons & international competition.

If mountain running championships were only invented so US runners could win something why is this the first time one of them actually has won it?

Anyway, be sure to let us know when you win your "invented" world championship so we can all denigrate it for you.

........and Max is a stud......he took down a strong field from what I can tell......he probably has the best range of racing capability in the US currently.......remember Max did run for Nike, and guys like Rupp, while great ruuners, would have gotten crushed in this race......not a doubt in most people's minds.......you have to have balls of iron to win this thing, not to mention the speed.

Sometimes the ignorance on this board is staggering. This is not an ' Ultras or Muddy Buddy or whatever', this is an officially recognized IAAF event.

Yeah, there is no way in hell a guy was averaging sub 7s with anything more than a few steps at 30%.

yes, the technical profile says the course features grades up to 40%. These are for incredibly small sections of the course, but these grades almost send one reeling backwards. I did not mean to imply it was 30% grades the entire race. The average I believe was around 12-15%. regardless, the pace kept involves almost dead stops and then sudden powerful surges

I'm a big Max King fan but if you think Rupp would have gotten "crushed" in this race, you are very wrong.

Rupp would never toe the line in an event like this one - wouldn't even need Papa Salazar to make the call for him. I saw that picture of the course - not Rupp certified X100!

Does anyone think he actually has a shot? I feel like it's up in the air. Hall has never raced a bad marathon and as defending champion I feel he'll take it, but what about second and third?

He definitely may be in the running. I think for sure he'll get top 5 at the trials, and make the team if someone has an off day.

Unless Hall is injured he's pretty much a lock to make the team and he has no history of serious injury or blown races.

Ritz, Meb, and maybe Abdi are heavy favorites to make the team if healthy, but, looking at recent history, there's a good chance that a couple of these guys won't be in top form.

That means someone of the next tier will probably be on the team, Gotcher, Arciniaga, Hartmann, Lehmkuhle, and Torres come to mind.

After that you have the dozen or so darkhorse guys, including Max, any of whom could step up their game by the time trials rolls around to be in the running if (and probably only if) one of the top guys fail.
