Mick was not happy with the effort:
“Look at the team score. That says it all,” a disappointed UW coach Mick Byrne said. “(I) didn’t quite expect the response from a few guys over that last K when things started getting a little bit rough. If you’re a Badger and you want to be on this team, you’re going to have to put it down and run Badger tough.”
Sophomore Drew Shields won the 6,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 21 seconds. Shields was the only one of the five Badgers returning from last year’s third-place NCAA team to run on Friday.
“We put him in there at the last minute to just kind of control the other guys,” Byrne said. “Unfortunately, he didn’t get the support that we expected some of those guys to give him.”
