Tegenkamp and Bauhs could not handle the surges. If you try and follow and are not prepared the big bad bear will jump on your back and make you look like the fool.
Rupp had nothing to be ashamed of. He handled the surges, he was just out kicked.
Each year ALSAL get Rupp closer to the Africans. 27:26 in championship is nothing to ashamed of.

You are so negative and very unknowledgeable about distance running at the world class level. First of all, it was a great race (wish we could of seen all of it). Mo gave a great effort and did everything that he could, but was beaten by someone who wanted it more than he did (and/or was a bit more talented). The Ethiopians and Kenyans are amazing. Rupp ran a good race, but was not ready to run that fast at the end (marathon may be his best chance to ever medal at the WC/Oly level). Teg has had a great career (placed 5th WC XC at the junior level) took 4th at WC in 5k and has made numerous finals at WC and the Oly games. He was hurt last year and missed all season and is back to a fairly high level, but not able to get back and peak, etc. That is very difficult. I wish everyone was not so critical. Our American women are tough at almost every distance; Manzano and others are exciting in the 1500; Lagat will hold his own in the 5k, but probably not able to win. We have a chance to medal in the 800. People, these are the best in the World; try going to one of these and you may have a little more respect for the level of competition!!!!!!!!

Well stated. People on these threads are, in general, way too negative and disrespectful of the athletes. I am a former high school/collegiate distance runner and just roll my eyes at all the arm-chair generals on here.
The amazing depth of competiton aside, Teg's performance was dismal and his post-race interview provided even more dissapointment. He had it all figured out, stating his loss of last year caused him to feel fatigued, but aerobically he was OK? So what he was really saying was he didn't do enough strength work even though he planned to race over 10K?
He displayed decent fitness during US XC Nationals and from there had plenty of time to do the work needed for him to perform at somewhere around the 27:45 level. But 28:41 (equal to 2 14:20 5Ks) is almost not worth showing up, especially for with his talent, exerience and capability. Was the objectve a flight to Korea for a tempo run?
Unlike Kara Goucher he did not cite an injury he was struggling with, he, quite simply was not propoerly fit for these championships, which is why all of us are so frustrated with his result.
Teg, just a reminder, you are a paid, professional athlete and performing at major championships is what it's all about!

Teg is not in primo shape and the not-fully-fit will generally slow down more in humid conditions, especially when dropped out of the lead pack.
Mo Farah ran a courageous race - an A+ effort - but I wish he hadn't kicked from as far out as he did. I wish he had waited until just a little closer to home, but who knows? He was inches from a gold medal in a 10k race!
Rupp did a fantastic job too. I'm sure he's somewhat disappointed, but, c'mon, he ran a helluva race, at least in my book.
We all wanted more but Rupp ran great. 27:25 in a race that went out in 13:52. Historically I recall the usual top 27:30 American placing near last in the Olympics in 28:30. Then again they had to run heats.
Teg just isn't on. Once he knew he couldn't hang I imagine it got a lot harder to compete for the last half and what does that get him other than pride. I'm sure he ran as hard as he thought he could but when you're that far back it seems a lot harder.

Well, yeah, except that Ritz ran faster at the last world championship.
Agree that Rupp ran great, though. Even though he was dropped instantly when the kick started, he was with the lead group until 600 left. That is good progress.
Will he get to the next level and be in the mix during the kick? Well, we can always hope.
