With regard to your puzzling no-button collar advice, keep in mind that this is a casual situation. We are not talking about a wedding, funeral or business situation. Button down oxford shirts can be VERY sharp in a casual situation.

It seems that you are champing at the bit a little too soon. Take a few steps back, learn the basics and then enjoy being a man.

Well, you'll see that I advised against the pinstripes numerous times. I am in agreement with you.

A button down collar with a blue blazer and brown trousers often looks much better than a spread.

Again, as I said earlier, I think we are all in agreement that he should ditch the pinstripes.

To the others, there is nothing gay about knowing how to dress. It is part of being a man. When you grow up, you'll understand.

Spend some time in Italy and see how many men wear button down shirts with a suit (note that I decry this, not button down shirts per se). The only style guides I've seen where button down shirts with a suit have been given the thumbs up have been American. Hmm.

... so if OP is in America, the button down shirt will be fine. I prefer socks to match pants. I also like the look of a shirt and a tie without jacket, but I am from the south, where it is often too %! hot to wear a jacket.

I lived in Italy for a year, believe it or not. I think we are on the same page. For a formal situation, one should stay away from a button down collar. That said, if the suit is being worn casually, it can be done (say a seersucker). In addition, button-downs with an odd jacket can be more fashionable. I must admit that I thought you were advising against button down collars in general. Still, in his situation, I think that a button down oxford would look sharp.

Can we agree that he get rid of those bloody awful pinstripe pants?!!?

As for the American style guides... you, sir, are the one citing AskMen. I mean, damn!

Tie without jacket will never fly in the South. If you don't need a jacket, you certainly do not need a tie.

Knowing how to dress yourself, and for how to dress for the appropriate situation is essential to being a man. The guys that don't care about their clothes because it's "gay" are usually morons. Show that you care about yourself and women will appreciate the effort. No woman WANTS to be with a slob or with a grown man that dresses like a 10 yr old.

Wrong, these are simple rules of grooming that every man should know.

Fair enough. As a closing note, my pet fashion peeves for men are, in no particular order:

1) Clothes that don't fit

2) rubber soled shoes with business wear

3) anything attached to a belt

4) untucked dress shirts

5) hats worn indoors

6) monogrammed shirts (tacky)

7) denim cut-offs
