Oshier will destroy Verzbicas in the Dream Mile

Cheserek has had huge ends to all the seasons so far. Second place in nxn and nbin two mile. His two mile was only two seconds off the national record. He also has run 1:50.2 800m split after opening in 50 flat. If anyone other than Verzbicas or Oshire wins, it's going to be Cheserek.

I hope I'm right too :) I have nothing against LV either, and I acknowledge that he officially set the 2 mile record, but I just don't find that setting HIGH SCHOOL records in PRO races with your own personal rabbit gives it the same feel as running in a completely HS race like JO did yesterday. He's a local star for me; I live probably <30 miles away from Trabuco and I've seen several of his races in person. He also has been relatively unacknowledged until this year when he started tearing things up during the indoor season, whereas LV has been dominating since his freshman year, despite the fact that he was a year old, but barely ran any races. It probably peeves me specifically because I compete against people usually a year or two older than I am in my races because of grade skipping.

Let's bear in mind this probably won't go through 1200m in 3:00 or faster, and that Mudd closed his 4:03 at Indiana's State Meet with a 24 second last 200 (not blowing smoke, watch the film). I'll put it like this. LV and Oshier HAVE to run sub-4 to beat him, or at least make sure he is not on their shoulders with 250 to go, otherwise they've got problems.

If the race goes out as it SHOULD, I'm sure they'll beat him. I find it strange that Oshier doesn't have an enormous kick in the last 200 or so in the race; sure he has a good kick it's not AMAZING, and he has just about the same 400 meter speed as Gedyon. It seems like he starts winding up with 1200 to go, then throughout the whole last lap picks it up, as evidenced by his 57 second last lap yesterday.

If Oshier has a good race on Saturday he will win and go sub-4.

LV is in a different race than the rest of those kids. LV 3:56-7, Oshier can win the B race in a 4:05.

(Note that I am not being literal here. The runners will run the same distance, starting at the same time...but there will be two races: LV v Clock, and The Field v Each Other.)

Is there a rabbit for this affair, and if so do we have an idea of targeted splits?

This has got to be the best high school mile field ever assembled, slowest guys is a 3:53 1500 runner.

Verzbicas just shattered the 2M record and while GF could have run faster than that in a pro race (and certainly had he been healthy for years, as Verzbicas has been), Verzbicas also took 7 seconds off the longstanding 8:36 record of Jeff Nelson, which was done against pros. Verzbicas has the mile credentials already. I don't think that anyone stands a chance against him in a fast race. In a sit and kick race in 4:10, he could lose. But he is fully capable now of going well under 4. He has been trained by Eastern European pros (his parents) for years and is much more fully developed for that reason. The other guys may improve more in college and later than he does because they have not had the same caliber of coaching. On the other hand, he was a triathlete until recently.

Who on Earth came up with the idea that Mudd closed in a 24 second 200?

It's a shame though that the Dream Mile is being held the same day as the NY State Meet. I'm sure Aisling Cuffe (4:40 1600) and Mary Cain (4:23.1 1500) could've destroyed the field. Instead they'll be duking it out in the state meet. Sort of disappointing. Especially since the Dream Mile is being held in NY.

I'm pretty sure Oshier does as of yesterday, unless you count LV's downhill road mile where he already went sub 4? I might be mistaken though?

Thanks for the heads up on the other post about the NY state meet. I didn't know that and was wondering why Cuffe wasn't on the girl's list.

To the poster who said LV is on a whole different level, I would agree in the 2-mile and over, which we already knew judging from his XC dominance. LV looks like a true distance runner to me; however, I would still say he is the favorite in the Dream Mile, but not by much. I expect Cheserek and perhaps Oshier and one of two other athletes to be right there with him. LV's 4:03 indoors and his 8:29 2-mile suggest he probably in 4:00 shape; I don't think the other guys can handle that. Cheserek has shown the ability to handle a brutal pace and stay on his feet, but 4 flat is probably too hot for him as well. I specifically point out Cheserek because he is the only athlete in the group who has ‘actually competed’ against LV. Although, if the pace slips and they come through 1200 in anything slower than 3:03...all bets are off for who wins.

Btw, for many years we have seen a bunch of athletes get under 4:05 and people start talking about sub-4 and it never happens. (I even got caught up in it once or twice.) In ’09 we had Robbie Andrews, Mac Fleet and Andrew Springer all running around 4:03 for a full mile, last year it was LV, Gedyon and Alex Hatz who were in somewhat similar territory and this year it is Oshier and Orman, etc., but the difference between 4:05 or even 4:03 to 3:59 is a chasm. The only 2 H.S. athletes who did not run sub four, who under the perfect circumstances probably could have was Donald Sage and German Fernandez. I don’t think the other kids ran under 4 minutes because they couldn’t. Even if no one dips under 4 minutes, I can see the boys mile top-10 list being rewritten; I can see LV going 4:00 and couple of 4:01/2s. I don’t think LV can run sub-4 in June in an all H.S. race; I see LV as a stronger version of Hall, Ritz and Rupp (no 800m credentials) and if he breaks sub-4 it will be later in the year at USA Jr or a race against pros and he will barely dip under.
