Why wouldn't he have said anything, and what is funny about that?

pretty sure he caught a huge tailwind for this race
Wow I was wrong about Van Calcar. I just must have remembered him as being top steepler in HS that year. The Jeff Hess mark must now be the oldest HS outdoor mark for distances. No, Chapa's 10k has never been close to being touched in 35 years.
Impressive 9:03 by Andy Martin as a HS junior as well.
Gotta love this guy. Half marathons, steeple chases, and so on. Talk about versatility. Anyone have a video of the race?

....and Andy's son Connor will be teammates with Owens next year at Princeton. Connor ran 5:54 (2000m Steeple) and 9:20 (3000m steeple) last year as a HS Junior.

Yes, steeplechasers tend to be able to run half marathons and so on, :-)
He won the NCAA Steeple his senior year as the last act of Oregon State track and field for quite a while (the women started and now the men participated in the NCAAs with two HJers from the football team.
It was a great race with the Oregon crowd cheering on their rival school for that last race. That was the last year I taught at Oregon State as well.

Don't know if there is a video, but here is an article on this guy I found in Milesplit: He apparently ran a record-breaking half marathon in NYC just a few weeks ago, too:
http://rise.espn.go.com/track-and-xc/us/features/misc/eddie-owens-feature.aspxArticle answers the mystery of why this guy is only starting to show up on the running radar screen all of a sudden: he has only been running for a couple of years - - before that he was a soccer / basketball player!
additional shout out to Travis Mahoney from Temple for running a HUGE 8:41. kid musta turned beast mode on high.
NORTH PHILLY STAND UP
He didn't break any record in the NYC Half a few weeks ago. Just like Boston, the NYC Half is a point-to-point, downhill course that had the benefit of a huge 12mph tailwind. Owen's ran a super race that day, but it wasn't record-breaking as you suggest.

"Owens’ road to his accomplishments has been a challenging one. Living in Brooklyn Heights means limited places to run clean five-mile or longer training sessions. There are even less venues to run on grass and dirt like he does at meets outside of his speed workouts.
Instead, he trains on concrete."
Eddie Owens keeps in on the 'Crete!!!
26mi235, we've talked about this before. Owens is what someone with steeplechase talent looks like. They show it early. Nothing but upside.
Compare Owen's steeplechase history to Bethke or Agosta. Owens has taken to the steeple like a "rat take to cheese."
I have the same feeling about this one as I did about Ryan Hall during his junior year in high school. When his body matures a bit, look out! He may not be the next American record-holder, but he is at the front of the succession line, if you ask me.
Does that mean that he will be the LRC Message Board whipping boy in 8 years or so?

Why is that embarrassing? Can you beat the kid?

The way I see it, he's not your typical high school Manchild that is the result of precocious puberty. This one is still a kid. Lot's of upside for him, in a big way.
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/high_school/more_sports/packer_owens_eager_to_step_on_national_xnB0vAAhqgOUGaZC1Z6h3HList fixed for yet another high schooler throwing down on Princeton's track this year.
I don't believe this is a valid "fix" to the list as Cheserek is not an American. This is a list of American runners. Don't want to get technical, but a non-U.S. runner does not get entered to the U.S. record books simply because he ran on American soil. Just saying.

Was AlSal a citizen in high school? Serious question.
a teammate of mine has been doing some coaching of distance runners at packer collegiate the past few years, so congratulations to him on helping this boy break 9 in hs.
looks like this kid fell in love with the hype, tried to go with Joe Rosa in a 5k out at 14 minute pace and ended up running 14:52 last night.
Why can't you put his age as well hs'er is a bit non specific
shame on him for going for it in a race. what was he thinking? should have just hung back for the first 4900, and then gone for it on the homestretch.
