Inspirational yes, but it was a race that Both Desi and Sara qualified for as freshmen. Which is extremely difficult to do in california. That in itself should have been a sign that both were destined for great things. Regardless of their finish in that race, both found different paths and their careers are not comparable since one is a 1500/3k/5k runner and the other is a marathoner.

just goes to show that setting early achievements up as the condition for permanent priority is foolish. People change and develop, and work ethic is one of the primary keys to performance, but since it is not easily measurable, it is dismissed and the admissions standards are used as a proxy for ability. I'm thinking of job placement here. Those who get into the top graduate schools get an absolute advantage over those who do not. Performance at graduate school is given little weight, and so the best professionals do not have a shot at the best jobs. Davila is inspiring.

I coached a girl who beat DD at both the CA state meet and Golden West. My athlete is now a mother of 3 and doesn't really run anymore.
There are a lot of side tracks on the way to becoming a top runner. Congrats to Desi for her steady, strong improvement.
