good performance for Cheserek, I still think his 2mile was better, but he is definately in the mix for some big wins this year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him take a shot at Germans record before it's all said and done.

Fairly crappy weather for this meet. Not brutally bad, but chilly and windy enough to slow things down some - I'd guess 5 or so seconds slower than ideal for the steeple races, maybe close to 10 seconds slow if you were leading a lot of it. Van Ackeren ran 8:49 last year, so beating him is pretty damn good for a HS sophomore. The 8:50 HSR is definitely in big time jeopardy this season.

You'd think with the 2M record at 8:34 and pretty good number of additional sub-8:45s that the steeple record might be at least in that low 8:40s range. But there aren't as many high schoolers that work on the steeple and (partly because of that) there aren't as many opportunities for HS guys to race against good steeplers.

so i was reading about this kid months ago when cross was ending and he said in an interview that his goal would be to become an american citizen. (like lagat or lopez) i figure if he goes to high school in the US than he is just as worthy of being an american as lopez is. pretty sick to see this kid run so fast. lukas better watch his ass cause he is coming for him...

For the record, I have a strong opinion on this situation that will NOT change anytime soon. Bring the flack.

Edward Cheserek is a H.S. sophomore...a 17-year old H.S. sophomore. The same age as Gerry Lindgren, Jim Ryun, German Fernandez, Craig Virgin, Marty Liquori, Matt Centrowitz, Chris Derrick were as seniors...so...imagine what German would have done had he had two mores years in H.S. after he ran 8:34?

This is not a mockery of the U.S. prep distance runner, it is a mockery of is the H.S. Class Records and the current prehistoric system on how we maintain US prep records.

Most likely Cheserek will establish all-time marks at every prep distance from the MILE to 10K before leaving H.S. and not even be a US Citizen.

Wrong again. Barrier skills have shit all to do with it. The engine is all. Look at any WC or OG final and tell me how great the barrier skills of the top three look. All the time Americans spend messing about with hurdle drills for the steeple would be much better spent RUNNING.

I was at the meet. Although technique clearly isn't everything in the steeple, he could definitely shave many seconds with more barrier practice. He was stepping on many of the barriers and losing ground by not accelerating and clearing them.

All in all, he looked pretty good against a very good steeple field of competitors.
