One of the problems of articles regarding training programs of the top athletes is that there is only a part of the training, normally the SPECIFIC part.
Many readers suppose this is the usual type of training of the champion. Instead, that's not true : the most part of times, there is an example of one session with the highest intensity, that is only the small cherry on the cake.
For example, Shaheen one day in 2006 used a special block that is astonishing : in the morning, 4x1600m with 4'30" recovery, in 3'56" / 3'59" / 3'58" / 3'57", and in the afternoon, 2 sets of 5x300m (50" recovery and 2'50" between the sets) with the average of 38"5 in the first set, and times as 39" - 37"2 - 37"3 - 37"1 - 37" in the second set.
Somebody supposed this was his training system, instead this was only the hardes workout in his life.
What is more important to know, is not the max level of training, that, because these athletes are phenomen, isn't part of a system, but their TRAINING in order to prepare their SPECIFIC TRAINING. The base of progress is to understand the Training for Training.
Under this point of view, this is one of the reasons because there are so many versions about mileage. High mileage of low mileage ? But mileage without considering the speed is nothing. When EG ran 1 hour at 3' / km, the distance is 20 km. Is this high mileage, or low mileage ?
I can only say, for direct experience, that EG has still the record, in Ifrane, of a course of about 25 km, where the second time (of course in training) is 35" slower, from Gharib.
And that he had unbelievable sessions of gym, using a lot of circuits at very high intensity, as Sebastian Coe and Said Aouita.
About the low mileage of Sebastian Coe, I remember than in 1986, preparing European Championships, when he was in Tirrenia (Italian National Center) in February, he asked me to follow him with the car in a training of 30 km on tarmac road, that he finished in 1 hr 39', and the next day he had a gym session lasting 2 hours without recovery...
So, take with a grain of salt what you read in short about a full training phylosophy of top athletes.
