I'm not sure why German gets so much trash on here. He is a young runner still. When he was running amazing (3:55.0, 13:25, NCAA Champ) he was running reckless.
I'm hoping he is realizing that eventually he will have to learn how to time his "peak" and run well in the big races, every time he toes the line but he's learning. Hopefully he has a crazy outdoors, defending his 1500 title.

yep, someone has a down year and they are officially done and wont ever be able to run again. that makes sense...didnt he finish 8th at NCAAS for XC? I know that people would expect more from him after what he did in hs/frosh year but that is still pretty outstanding. 7:52 isnt too shabby either. The way i see it is that he is on an upswing from what was a very down year. I think he is going to shut up all you doubters this season.
Maybe he is that high school kid that showed all the potential in the world , got to college showed a little of what might be and faded into a good college runner not the great one we had hoped for. He would not be the 1st or last.
He will have a good college career , help the team , get a degree and always be able to look back at the day in history he ran one of the greatest high school distance doubles of all time.

I am encouraged by that 1:52. I'll agree with the OP and say 3:40 at Stanford.
Btw, German's 3:39.00 was in very difficult conditions where he led the entire way. His indoor mile PR converts to a significantly faster PR. So all that to say I think 3:40 is totally reasonable for German.

Are you kidding? Just help the team? "good" college runner? He ran a 3:55 mile indoors as a frosh and then won the 1500 title outdoors LEADING FROM START TO FINISH in a distance that most people would agree is not what he is best suited for. Talent like that doesnt just disappear.
He needs to get back on the alter g if you ask me. That thing did miracles for him coming off of injury.
He's got a good field to run against in that 1500: Acosta, Bauhs, Foster, Torrence. Should be fairly quick if they can get a good rabbit.

No , Im not kidding , just frustrated. He's a JR and has not shown the progress of talent you reference , as said he showed a little of what what we hoped for.
Lets compare a Rupp or Hasay as great HS talents that evolved. Best suited ? Talent as he has is expected to run in and well in all areas and finish , no excuses.
The physical talent is there no question , the between the ears talent is the toughest to coach.
Lets wish him the best.
Remember his coach has a Ph.D in a difficult medical laboratory science. Herman is concentrating on his studies.

I'm not sure what people stepping in front of you, shoes coming off, potholes and other BS has to do with "talent between his ears" but I still believe this guy can do it. A 1:52 isn't to bad dude! I think he's getting stronger and stronger as the season progresses and I'm really hoping for good things!
We don't know anything about how the 1:52 was run. It might have been tactical. It might have been windy. He might have just let off the gas (treated it like practice run).
Let's not start jumping to conclusions without all the facts.
There's only one thing you need to know about this guy:
HOW he won the outdoor 1500m title.
That should tell you he's giving his 100% on all his races or if he's not it's because there's a legit reason behind it.

German has a great frosh season, takes the lead into the wind and hold it, even when nobody will help him out. Goes wire to wire in a 1500.
German gets his shoe taken off very early in a 1500, and just gives up, no attempt to even finish.
See the difference? When German is rolling, he'll do what it takes. When he is not running well, he's as likely to step off the track as he is to finish the race.

How do you know he didn't momentarily tweak something and dropped out of caution - only to realize 30 seconds later it was fine? How do you know his coach didn't instruct German to drop out IF this happens?

I still don't get why he thought that he couldn't continue barefoot on mondo. The easiest track surface to run barefoot on.
