Wait, I remember after Batty ran his first 3:56 or something there was an article about him where he said he did 10 mile runs on all of his recovery days/ so something like 3 or 4 times a week. (d i think that was just in the morning), so no i dont think he is a particularly low mileage guy
"INSANITY" is extended cardio, although it doesn't specifically train the muscle fibers used for running distance. Treat it as such and respect the need for the cardio systems stressed by "INSANITY" to have time to recover.
You don't get stronger while running, just like you don't get stronger while lifting weights. You get stronger while RESTING and RECOVERING from a sufficient stimulatory stressor, as your body builds adaptations to the load.
Your body can handle more work i.e. recover from more work than it can adapt to. The key is to work to what you can adapt to (which is less than what you can recover from) and to keep intensity high enough to disturb homeostasis.
Lagat has routinely stated he runs 60-70 mpw (and was upping a bit to 80-90 because of his move to the 5k) for the past decade or so. Webb also says he clocks in the 50-60 mpw range. Spivey is also on record as running large periods of times in the sub 60 mpw range. Now they could all be lying but I think it is equally likely that you can run a super fast mile on that mileage.

I have also heard that Lagat runs low mileage but I am not sure I believe this either. I have been friends with Miles since we were in grade school. He was telling me that when he was on his mission, he actually discovered how to run a NEGATIVE MILEAGE week. He will train super hard for a week, then run NEGATIVE MILEAGE the next week. He tries to keep his average mileage on the season as close to zero as possible. This explains the conflicting reports; while Miles runs high mileage weeks, his average mileage is very low. With all the untraining that he does, his opponents don't stand a chance.
Is low mileage defined somewhere? I always thought of 50 mpw or lower as decent mileage. I have known some runners (and they are the exception) that run around 30 mpw and did very well. I would say that a 50 mile week is actually a pretty good week. anything over that is high mileage and will increase your chances for stress injuries.
I used the same lower mileage scheme as miles batty, but it lost most of its effectiveness in races after I went to a running store and took a shit in a pair of compression socks.
I heard he does like 3 sets of 10 push ups each day. Equivalent to about 10 miles a day.

There is no way he runs 30 miles a week. He went 4 flat, 3:57, and 3:59 all in a span of 24 hours. You have to have a pretty serious base to do something like that.

It sort of depends on what you are talking.If you define high as the top 25%, medium as the middle 50% and low as the bottom 25%, I am guessing for the the top 20 milers in the world, I am guessing high mileage would be over 100, low under 70. Make it the top 20 marathoners and high might be 140+ and low would be under 100.

It seems really common for people to take an elite's week of training and extrapolate it over their whole training cycle. For instance, Seb Coe. Guy ran big miles in the base phase, but was known for running 40 miles a week. Someone probably got a snippet of his training schedule and word spread that he does that all the time. Probably same issue with Batty. Sure, he may do low mileage during peak racing, but I'd be willing to bet his miles in the base period are upwards of 80 a week.

That's cool for you if that works, but when i tried to run running low mileage, even with intesity every day and weight lifting most days, I ran 18:30. I started running 70 miles a week for months on end and after a while i was breaking 17 in workouts.
I realize this is just my example, but ever since, i've pretty much cosidered all that cross fit crap voodoo designed for slow people.

One thing that I think plagues runners with the low mileage plan is the constant level of intensity. It is the same idea as that behind the "workout warrior" who trains hard but races like crap. You have to be able to keep your focus on the races. I fully endorse low mileage training.
