pretty cool. She looks great.
pretty cool. She looks great.
She looks GREAT. A post-menopausal woman ripped like that... anybody suspect he has been seeing an "anti-aging" doctor who could help her with test and HGH "deficiencies?"
Miscount or misrepresentation of mileage. End of story.
I'm not going to waste time on the video, but she probably told the reporter she "once did" or "sometimes gets up to" 80 mpw...
And we all know that if we stated our highest ever week (or highest ever 7-day period, as many do) as our "training mileage" we'd be lying (as many do).
I'd like to know what she looked like BEFORE she started working out - I would venture to guess she's never had a weight problem....good genes.
She did say that she and her sister started exercising after laughing at each other while trying on swimsuits because they looked so bad. But yeah, nothing wrong with her genes (at least as far as adapting to exercise).

I'm not sure why posters are obsessing on caloric intake vs output--who cares if calorie count or mileage count is wrong?
Looks aren't everything, but she looks great, no matter what the calorie or mileage count.
The odds are overwhelmingly that she is taking some medication, as another poster upthread commented.
HOWEVER, EVERY SINGLE PERSON I KNOW IN THE USA WHO IS OVER 70 YRS OF AGE IS TAKING SOME FORM OF MEDICATION, AND THEY DO NOT LOOK LIKE SHE DOES.
All other things being equal, her appearance and ability are the result of hard work, diligence, and genetics.
There are other people her age on the same meds--and they are not like she is.
There are other people her age with amazing genetics--and they are not like she is.
Hats off to her--and her physician.
but is she really 73 yrs old?
She is not 150-170 pounds so she is not burning anything like 100 calories per mile. Since she is going pretty slow, she is not doing as much vertical work or dealing with wind resistance. At that speed she takes a fair bit of her waking day to exercise and probably has a BMR that is in the 100-100 range with a lot of sleep. Still, the estimate might be 100 calories low -- they are hard to estimate that closely (though hers seems to be monitored well, and with low calories, she is probably not wasting/passing them through without absorbing most of it).
She is now trained by former Mr. Universe Yohannie Shambourger....Standing nearly 5' 5" and weighing between 118 and 120 pounds, Shepherd is adamant that she doesn't use any performancing enhancing drugs or even supplements other than vitamin D.
She's in great shape, and she LIES too!
Genetics my ass. Nothing but WORK gets a body like hers. Nothing.

I calculated her BMR (guessing about 105 pounds) and got 1060 kcal for an average 105 pound 5'5" 73 year old. I'm assuming she isn't running as fast as her 5k pace on her daily runs and slower running is more metabolically efficient, so I doubt she's burning more than 75 cal/mile, maybe even 65-70. If she's lower than average for BMR, maybe she's like 900 or something and lowest case scenario for running is maybe 700, so that would give her a 100 calorie allotment for her other workouts. Agreed, 1700 sounds a little low, but I could believe as low as 1900 if her mileage is correct. Maybe she's exaggerating mileage.
This woman is absolutely amazing! The most beautiful 73 yr old woman I've ever seen in my life. Her carmel colored skin is remarkable for a 25 yr old, let alone a 73 yr old woman. A six pack with a nice set of knockers also. I dont know if she is married, but some old man is a lucky son of a bitch.
...............and yet you letsrun haters still try to find something negative in the story. YOU PEOPLE ARE FVCKING IDIOTS TO THE Nth DEGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are actually trying to calculate her caloric intake vs her milage to try to find a discrepancy in the story. Unbelievable! You distance fags take hating to another level.

Fine, if she's not then neither were Lance Armstrong, Marion Jones and Jose Canseco.

And you are a very jealous LOSER! You are probably one of those geeks who never broke 2:10 in the 800(guy) and you are envious on any runner or athlete who is successful. People like you make me sick. You must live a miserable life. Kill yourself!
I've seen the results of HGH training with other seniors, too, which were equally impressive. I wonder at what age you have to start to still be holding it together at 73?

There is no pill in the world that could get those results. I feel sorry for you.
Wow -- I might start going to church!
We should arrange a get-together between her and Ed Whitlock. What a cute couple!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned her wrinkle-free face. As a former black co-worker (who was in her 70s) once told me, "black don't crack".
