A good point. But let me counter that T. Bekele ran 7:31 high - not far off his indoor PB - a year ago on this very fast Stuttgart track, then ran 7:28 twice in August.
Also, you missed the fact that Gebrselassie ran faster outdoors in 1998 than he did indoors. In fact, he did it twice:
7:26.15 Haile Gebrselassie ETH 1 Karlsruhe 25 January 1998
7:25.09 Haile Gebrselassie ETH 1 Brussels 28 August 1998
7:25.54 Haile Gebrselassie ETH 1 Monaco 8 August 1998
In this case, with a guy who is allegedly just 21 (january 1, 1990 is really his birthday??) and who burst on the scene from nowhere just late last year (having only one recorded performance before that, a 13:16 5000m, running 7:27.8 and 7:28 last year, you really have to give the benefit of the doubt on improvement. Where is the slow climb to a high peak or plateau here? How can we even judge what this guy is capable of? We know that summer weather conditions in Ethiopia (and Kenya, for that matter) have never kept Ethiopians (or Kenyans) from great late season European and WC performances. It may not be a great idea to focus on indoors, but this guy has more in the tank, I'm confident of that. 7:24/5 is attainable this year outdoors. Tariku took years of steady development to reach this level and this young man does it right off the bat. Amazing. (I'll assume he's clean until we see otherwise).
Found full event results at this link on meet website after using my non-existent German skills to find them.
Ah Gebrselassie was the first person I checked. I must have flipped results in my mind.

Could be a name to watch - was a medalist in the junior race at World Cross last year. I believe he's on a Japanese corporate team now, like so many of the other young Kenyan (and even Ethiopian) stars the last couple of years.
