Any tips on how I could keep myself from running easy runs fast?

I used to do that - you stop improving if you don't incorporate some easier runs

You know you are going too fast so I don't see why you need a hr monitor

Run somewhere with no people watching - who can resist speeding up when people might mistake you for a jogger

Start smoking and become fat. Problem solved.

I recently switched to running from miles to time, and I have found it to make my easier runs much more enjoyable (and all my runs for that matter) and more conducive to full recovery.

I also go out with the intention of enjoying every minute of the run. Sounds cheesy, but let me tell you, I've recently been loving running a lot more than the already great amount I have enjoyed running in the past.

Also, I have increased my mileage substantially.

I hate these idiots who come on here acting like they're physically unable to run slower, that is completely insane.

Throw in some high knee drills, A-steps or butt-kickers every 2 minutes or so.

1. Don't be an idiot.

2. Make friends.

3. Run with slower friends.

I've had some runners I coach who have this same scenario and some of the advice I see here does work. First, definitely run the hard runs harder - you will want to go easier on your easy days. Second, run the easy runs with slower runners. Third, run the first two miles of your easy runs two minutes per mile slower than marathon pace before allowing yourself to pick it up. One of the best ways is to do a negative split run for your 'easy' 10-miler. For example, if you would typically average 7:30 pace on this run, break it into five 2-mile segments. 2-miles @ 9:00, 2-miles @ 8:15, 2-miles @ 7:30, 2-miles @ 6:45, 2-miles @ 6:00. Only run the last two miles that fast if you feel very fresh. Usually by running so within yourself the first part of the run, you will feel great toward the end when you are speeding along. Negative splits rule!
