4x2 is an AWESOME workout. It's probably best for a 10k thru marathon type of runner, but it's going to kick anyone's ass into shape if they run it right.
4 x 2miles is an excellent workout for the half marathon or full marathon. I think that it would also be a good aerobic workout for a miler.
I usually do 3 or 4x3000 in a park when I am in Thailand or Japan. I think that 3 minutes rest (1 min. per km) is about optimum for interval workouts.

For you it' probably a very good aerobic threshold workout. Makes sense early in the season.
