"Though Byrnes' running style has worked for him, Dr. Robert Wilsterman, an orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Specialists in Falmouth, said it's "not the textbook regimen" recommended for most runners. A better alternative would be to infuse cross-training exercises into a workout to allow the body to heal better.
"You need to give your body time to recuperate from the microtrauma that running causes," Wilsterman said. "If you don't, that could lead to cumulative stress injuries."
Wilsterman said Byrnes' choice to limit his run to about two miles has likely kept him under the injury threshold.
"Had he chosen to do, let's say, five miles a day, every day, then that might not have been so sustainable," Wilsterman said."
That's why I never ask a doctor about running or running injuries.
