Lol. I know this guy who has three kids and the biggest wimp you will ever find. His wife cheats on him all the freakin time and he knows it. She comes home whenever she feels like it and tells him it is none of his business where she has been. He caught her with anothee guy. He ran home to mommy. She told him to pick her or his mommy. He went back to more abuse and humiliation.
He caught her kissing a friend then heard a sexual voice mail he left her. He asked her if she was having sex with him, and she told him she didn't have to tell him.
I have seen her ridicule him in front of people. Smack him in the head with a book and call him stupid. Totally disrespects him, and he just takes it.
Dude talks and acts gay as hell, too. Like most male nurses.
So, yes, it appears burning your male card is a requirement to getting your degree.
You seem to know a lot about this "guy".

As a matter of fact, I do run with women. And I guaran-f***in-tee you that the women I run with on occasion would smoke the shit out of you at any distance.
If you don't believe me, I live in Rochester, Michigan. You can do the google search and figure out what women I'm talking about.
Is study hall over yet? You need to get back to class.
Christian,
How did you get caught up in this argument? I don't mean to pile on but to quote Brian Sell "train with the women, you will run like a women". Having said that, I would get my ass handed to me by those women today.
Does a woodchuck chuck wood?
Is having a snowball fight with pitching great Randy Johnson a bad idea?
Does a former drill sergeant make a terrible therapist?
Does a bear use the bathroom in the woods?
If you answered yes to any of the following.....male nurses suck.

fathers a male nurse. more and more common nowadays.
i dont see it as womens work...also he gets paid roughly 130-150k a year...so you make the call
with that kind of money, he or anyone else shouldnt care if one poster thinks hes turning in his mancard.
plus the amount of schooling / money spent on tuition is so much less than to become a doctor...and its not like you get stiff-armed in terms of salary either.
A male nurse can be catagorised it with male hairdresses, dancers, and such jobs attendants - you are the smart one who surrounded himself with women
I once went to a nurses graduation ball. One of the best nights of my life!

I'd kill for a job like hers, and I could give a rat's ass if it's historically been a female profession. Anyone who lets gender stereotypes dictate their career choice is a moron.
If you would kill for a job like hers, man up and make it happen.
Quit your job, do a post-bac program to get you caught up to speed on your preq's, then do the same program your fiance did. Post-bac program will be 12-18 months, then you said the program itself is 28 months. In 3-4 years you will have the job you would "kill for". Surely the two of you can live on her $170,000 a year until then, and after that you'll be on easy street, making a combined $340,000+ and working 7-3 every day on similiar schedules.
3-4 year investment, to set you up in a great career that you'll probably have for the next 35-40 years (assuming you're a young guy). It truly is that easy.
Has there ever been a real man who talked about "man cards"?
"So you want to bring up the real man thing again?"
I find it sad that it is 2011 and there is so much homophobia here. I am a female nurse and I'd like to set the record straight on a few things...
1. male nurses are in high demand at all times. if you are staffing a floor, you would prefer to have some male nurses around to create a diverse work environment. therefore, any male who has an interest in human biology, pharmacology, and interacting with people should consider nursing because he will be in demand even when the economy is bad (and yes, the economy is bad for nurses too). there is significantly less money and time to invest in school compared to medical school. nursing provides a great income and very flexible hours that don't destroy relationships.
2. for those who are talking about mancards... you are pathetic. your statements about "woman's work" are disrespectful to the profession and to men and women alike. you are ignorant and sad folks. who are you to judge another person's line of work from behind a computer screen? get a life.
I could go on for days trying to explain more about nursing and about being a good person in general, but those lessons are too advanced for the majority of the letsrun crowd as evidenced by the responses on to this thread.
This is a related subject...have you ever seen, or heard of, a male dental assistant?
I know a few male nurses who are volunteer firefighters and one who is a firefighter and skipatroler. I'm pretty sure these guys have their mancards.
I am a stay at home dad. Should I turn my card in too. My wife is a teacher and we are both home all summer and I get lots of time to run. We have different priorites than money. My job is awesome. Although after weeks of great training my three year old got my sick when I have a race on Sunday. Already bought the airline tickets so hopefully I am a fast healer.

So, as a guy who would be interested in a career like this, what kind of degree would I want to look at? I love the technical stuff, so a specialized degree would probably be a good fit. Any recommendations?

No need to turn in your "mancard". I think men who stay at home with their kids are A-OK as long as they are doing it because they want to and are truly attentive, nurturing fathers. On the other hand, there are some stay at home dads who are just bums. It really just depends on the situation. There are a lot of dudes out there who make good money and are "respected" men in their community, but some are really just power-hungry douchebags. There are men who can do all their own car repairs and love to hunt, but also abuse their wives and drink a lot. Life is complicated, everyone's situation is different, and gender stereotypes are stupid. Be who you want.

Well, you've got issues you need to work on, but they really ought to come up with another term as "nurse" does ooze femininity. They do have the Physician's Assistant, but that's a different deal.
More men are going into it because it pays well and offers job security (relatively) and flexible hours in addition to a variety of work environments. I have a cousin (female) who is a Nurse Anesthetist, and she makes north of $180,000 a year. Lots of men would like to bring home that kind of bank.

Only if you are F-pole in disguise.
Actually hospitals like having physically strong male nurses around in case they need to restrain a violent patient which can happen, especially when someone is going psychotic on an OD in the ER. I doubt the OP could hang in this kind of situation.
A "real man" doesn't give a rat's ass what other men think about him. He goes after whatever career he wants because he's interested in it, not because of what others say.
That's a real man.
F the haters.

Well said, sir.
My brother-in-law had leukemia twice. He's now studying to be an oncological nurse so he can help people who are going through the same thing he did. Hardly sounds like he's turning in his man card to me. Also, he'll come out of school making 90k a year at 24.
