Astoria affordable community if you are willing to share and after loans/tax/insur you have 20Gs to live on.
The subway to Manhattan Lex line is 12 minutes by subway and the commute headway is about 5 mins so at worst 20 mins to 59 Manhattan. That's the same time as 80st and york ave.

I moved to NYC right after college making around $40K. Lived in a great 3-bedroom apt on the UWS for $1150/month. About 3/4 mile run to the park, which is one of my favorite things about the location...I'd highly recommend living near the park as a runner.
You can do it on a "low" income, just be smart. Take the subway or walk, not cabs. Hit up happy hours for drink specials. Go grocery shopping and cook for yourself instead of ordering takeout or buying lunch each day. Make your own coffee instead of buying Starbucks each day. I still go out on weekends and have fun with friends because that's important for me to spend $$ on.
I'm 24, have made this salary for 2 years now, and have $40K in savings and 0 credit card debt because I worked part-time through highschool and college and am smart about money. If you want to be in the city, make it happen. Enjoy being young and frugal, once your salary increases you can do even more.
my first job out of school with a b.s. in 2005 was 60k plus bonus. didn't save a dime of it!
Not me. NEVER.
