you know you can untag yourself right? Pretty much what everybody is complaining about can be fixed with facebook. Set your settings to you likes, don't add anybody you don't know, don't read "gossip" if you don't want to, untag pictures you don't like, don't put up any info you don't want your employers to see, etc. It's actually pretty easy.

Yeah, you can untag yourself if you catch the picture right after it's posted. Otherwise, it's been out there and maybe copied.

Not necessarily true. I have over a dozen female fb friends I've hooked up with, and at least a few more random makeouts. The key is to have a lot so that when some girl asks "who's she?" you're just like, "oh, i don't know, just a friend of a friend i met once who wanted to add me." i generally try to keep romantic interests away from my fb though. gets annoying when they start writing cryptic shit on the wall like "did you get back okay?" and people are like back from where yo??? but it's good for showing my new mates pictures of the hotties i've met.

Plus, try losing your phone with all its contacts and not being on fb. That would be fun.

I deactivated my facebook because 2 seperate girls asked me why I didn't update more often. I say because i dont feel like it. One of the girls says this makes me look bad. The final nail on the coffin though was when I got into an argument with a friend. One day later, another friend and witness to the argument thought it would be a great idea to ask me what the fight was about on my wall! Now the first thing people saw when they checked out my wall was that this dude was concerned about how I was doing after this fight with my friend. And I'm an adult!

This message would have remained on the top of my wall for a long time because like I said, I hardly ever update.

A certain very fast female runner now lives in a large city. She became a model. She was in a runway show which required her to paint her body instead of wear clothes.

A chic city photographer from the show posted her pictures on facebook. She's big city girl now and it's cool in such a cosmo community? Well, it's not cool for her considering she has a lot of friends from college and whatnot.

Anyway, someone copied the pics before she could take them down. Then they circulated to all her old teammates, etc.

If you want the pics I got them on my computer.

I like to play the games like scrabble and all with my friends and family that live on the other side of the country. Other than that I only update my profile about once a week.

I still have my happy birthday wishes showing at the top of my page and my birthday was about 3 months ago. I can't believe how regularly some people update and use it. Status updates are stupid.

One day, my cousin's wife, unhappy with her marriage, decided to leave her husband, and took the kids and disappeared, without any notice, nor any forwarding address.

Thanks to facebook, we found out she's now living in Australia.

Sure, but without FB you could have still found her quite easily.

FB is mainly for people who want to brag, period. Put up a photo or comment and then constantly check to see who has responded so you can respond back.

The OP is absolutely correct. I have many, many friends who had accounts and begged me to get one. I said I'd rather meet at the local pub and talk versus the FB way. Most all of those friends deleted their accounts within the last 6 months. The FB dominos fell.

The main holdout is a guy who likes to post his race efforts and then have those who don't know him as well praise him for being so good, he's not, and still being able to run in his mid 30's. Insecurity and embarrassing at the same time. He is so bummed out that others have deleted their accounts because now they can't keep up on his amazing life. And yes, he's got a cell phone but knows if he calls someone saying the same thing, it will be bragging, but posting on FB is different. Ironic isn't it.

FB "will" go away one day for the most part. People have lost focus on their lives and what's important. Using the internet properly is great. Spending hours of your life day after day on FB is a waste of a life. I am on LR once a week, checking in on results and an occasional post. It's not my life.

Spot on, but that's what people like. Bragging and seeing who will give them the thumbs up. Honestly, it's like a stupid cult following. Full Disclosure: I deleted/deactivated my account last Spring. To those of you who haven't tried it, do so for a month. I bet you will be surprised to see how much time you have left to do other things. I won't be going back to Facebook, ever. I got sucked in but I made it out and am glad I did. If you want to talk to me, email or call me or better yet, we'll go for a run:).

With any self control at all Facebook can be a great thing. I've had a account for maybe 3 years. I check it probably twice a day for an average of 2 minutes each time. I think I've made about 5 status updates the entire time I've been on there.

I am more or less a lurker. I have a couple hundred friends. Caught up with many people who were great friends in life that I would have never heard from again without Facebook. I hear all the big news that happens in peoples lives. I have deleted all the idiots that I had as friends that have a new status update every 20 minutes about worthless shit. I've basically set up my account so 90% of the negative stuff is gone and it's more like a news feed from people about their lives.

If you don't abuse Facebook it can be a great tool. It's probably easier to use like I do when you're 30+ though. I can't imagine what it would have been like in high school or college.

That's fine and that's your right. You are mainly a lurker, but most aren't. They are secretly obsessed with every post and comment made on this or that. Even when they make a post on someone else, they check back constantly to see what and if someone else responded.

To each there own and all things have a place, but I personally don't think Facebook is one of them. If I know someone that well, then they have my email address or phone number.

But, that's my choice pal and you have made yours. I think it's overkill and with all due respect to you, I honestly believe it will be no big deal sooner than most think.

Case in point. I am meeting a running buddy this evening at a place called Cheese Burger in Paradise. I will enjoy that a lot more than some typed words and a few photos on the internet, but that's me.
