With 2 Billion Java Phones the worldwide phone market is dominated by Java ME. Linux Pad and Linux Smartphones will use Java ME and True 4G. LTE and WiMax is passe already, and Verizon/AT&T can't even provide good service with a small number of iPhone & Android users on 2G/3G networks. Apple & Android growth remain severely limited by the piss poor US wireless phone network.
pretty stupid that you have to buy a different iPhone for at&t and for verizon. that's a trashy design.
Smart phones are for now provided by Google, Apple, and RIM. They are made from the same cheap components available to any electronics manufacturer. The market will soon be flooded with $50 Java ME and Linux Smart Phones from China.
They run two completely separate networks, GSM and CDMA. Of course they're going to be different phones. With that being said, the Thunderbolt is coming out for Verizon quite soon, which will beat the Droid X and the Incredible pretty handily. I would take Android over Apple just because of the ability to root the phone and take full advantage of it. I rooted my Evo and now I took all of Sprint's stupid bloatware off of there, and, because tethering is built into the operating system, I can tether for free.
In 1996, NTT Docomo, Japan, released the IP (Verilog & C source codes) for 3G. That means NTT gave 3G away as opensource for free use by any entity. Thus 3G is 15 years old. 3G is ancient technology older than Windows 98 ;-) Off the shelf chips, and IP/Test Vectors exists for the WCDMA/EVGO/GSM core from dozens of vendors.
Much as I love materialism, the iPhone is by far the worst phone I've ever had. the f***ing POS does everything EXCEPT make calls.
I am a small business owner. I have used Blackberry (and it has limited apps) and have looked at Droid X and now looking at iPhone 4. My concerns with Droid are turning over all my data to the Google giant and waiting for some hacker to steal it all. One good thing about Blackberry is that I can backup and sync directly to my PC without internet involvement. I do not believe that Droid does this as it requires a Google account. Does anyone know if iPhone 4 can sync directly without Google or other server farm having my data?

Don't know about iPhone, but you definitely do not have to use the internet to back anything up on Droid. You can plug your Droid directly into a USB port in your computer. The standard charger also works as a USB cable.
I understand that you can backup your Droid by connecting directly to your PC via USB but how do you sync your vital information like contacts and calendar appts without using Google?
