I was a laptop lover since 2007 but recently reverted to the good old strong robust desktop and with the money i spared i bought myself a good looking tablet.
A tablet is much cooler to surf the web at home while watching television and it is also much more portable.
Your idea is a good. A desktop, and a tablet combination is excellent.
I have a iPad with 3G. I also have a pretty good laptop. I only take the laptop on the road for business use. The iPad is sways with me. It is great for information consumption. In don't use the tablet for word or spreadsheet work, or writing long emails. I am using it home for this post.
I got an iPad for Christmas, and I think it is pretty much worthless. It pretty much belongs to my 5 and 6 year old kids now who mostly play Tic Tac Toe and Angry Birds with it. Do not buy one of these thinking it will be a computer. Oh, and to anything with the iPad you have to have another computer and install iTunes on that and then backup, sync, etc. the iPad...and iTunes is straight from hell in case you do not know.
Um, worthless? You are very wrong about that. You gave up too fast, and don't how to use it.
Your claim is like someone who bought a stick shift car, having never driven one, and claimed that car design was worthless. Or, a first time bike rider, who fell down, and claimed bikes sucked, walking was the only way to get around.
A tablet computer is not a computer replacement. Backing and installing through iTunes is not an issue.
Um, no, I am more like the guy who has driven stick all his life and is quite happy with it. I do like the touchscreen interface for the iPad. That part they nailed. But the fact that you can't really do anything productive with it makes it seem like it is designed more for "infotainment". And if that is the case then the fact that it can't run Flash makes it a complete failure. Well maybe complete failure is an exaggeration, but if you can't even run NFL.com and YouTube...well, enough said.
YouTube is built into to the iPad.
Flash is worthless in its current form. Flash is being overhauled, hopefully so it will run nice on any tablet device, not just the iPad.
People use computers as infotainment, much more than you realize. You just mentioned Youtube and NFL.com, two pure infotainment websites. ESPN and all online newspapers are pure infotainment.
I used to pay about $25 a month for a couple of home delivery newspapers. Those subscriptions are canceled. I read the news entirely online, and almost always on the iPad.
Maybe I wasn't clear. I too use computers for infotainment. I mentioned YouTube and NFL.com because these are two of my favorite sites. You can say Flash is worthless I suppose, but many popular websites are based on it including the two I just mentioned. So for the iPad to decide to not use Flash is a huge dissapointment no matter how much the Apple dorks think it sucks.

With all due respect, labeling the iPad a "tablet computer" is probably a bit too generous.
While the iPad is a very nice entertainment device, I have a hard time classifying anything that is missing an optical drive, USB or SD ports, HDMI out, Flash support, native widescreen aspect ratio, a camera/webcam, GPS, third-party web browser support, a stylus OR a physical keyboard as a "computer," tablet or otherwise.
Well they are computers, whether you like that or not, doesn't matter. Classify them your own way as you wish, but you better consider the following paragraph. Does a device that can run DOS or Windows 3.1 qualify as a computer? Of course it does.
There is a hack product for iPad called iDOS. It was briefly available as a legit download for the iPad. It was quickly pulled from the Apple Store when they learned that the first purchasers found a way to install old DOS games and software on the iPAD. One person even found a way to install Widows 3.1 on the iPad.
That should have been Windows 3.0 has been installed, on the iPad, not 3.1.
There's all kinds of computer systems. The iPad uses an A4 SoC 1Ghz ARM fabbed by Samsung. The GPU and CPU and tons of logic are on that one Samsung SoC chip. SoC has the whole motherboard on a chip. The iPhone uses a slower 600MHz SoC chip.
Digital Cameras, HD Video Cams, etc. have used SoC, ASIC, CPLD, FPGA devices for decades. The current design lines are pushing optical limits but have enabled Samsung to produce the A4 for Apple. Qualcomm produces the SoC chip used on the Android phones.
