The only thing that would make this attempt interesting is when Josh stops because of cramps and lifts his shirt to wipe his runny guyliner we see his huge, misspelled Jesus tattoo has been inked over to read--

I don't mind Josh Cox so much doing all these stunts. Sure it would be nice to see him try to lower is Half Marathon and Marathon times and actually train like he's going to make the Olympic Team but since he already accomplished the goal of qualifying for the trials again I think he's allowed to do whatever he wants. It's Wardian that should stop the stunts and focus on a qualifying race. Stop doing the Disney World Marathon and treadmill and indoor races and qualify for the trials! You are running out of time!

How would you change his training so he could make the Olympic team?

Do you understand that he's logging 130+ miles a week for the 50k?

This is the best pre-trials training he could be doing - establishing a great base to work with over the next year.

Like I said earlier in this thread; what would say, doing Boston, and finishing 14th or so do for him that this cannot?

Look at what these 'stunts' do for him in terms of marketing as an athlete.

He is the most well known and highest paid 2:13 marathon runner in the world. The guy has more sponsors than most 2:10 guys.

I honestly don't understand, why would he have to do a marathon and then go to the track. Don't you guys have 50km races? We have two coming up in March and April, maybe he should just pop over to South Africa for a holiday.

If Josh Cox can get the 50K WR this must be a minumum of 300 other runners in the world that could easily get it as well, but just have better things to do. Kind of similar to the DMR WR is probably some NCAA team and I'm sure there's even a 500 meter WR somewhere. I'm sure the Krispy Kreme challenge in N.Carolina has a pretty impressive record as well. Not taking away from the great talent and hard worker he is, but being the only runner in the race, finsihing on the track, etc. not my cup of tea.

If I could do what he does and not work, I'd be doing it. Even if I had to do the guyliner/manscara/model thing. And EVERYONE else on this board would too. A lot of jealousy around here...

Of course it is soft, there is nobody competing for this record. Josh's marathon PR is over 9 minutes off WR marathon pace. That's all you need to know.

Josh is a very talented runner, but let's get real. He's not world class. By that I mean competitive against an elite field. The 50k world record is a joke. Why not compete for 500k or even 1000k?

You were making sense until the end there. How is 50k even comparable to 500k or 1000k? In that case, it seems like the 100m dash would be just as similar to the 100k as the 50k is to any of these things. You can't just arbitrarily criticize race distances and think that other race distances aren't arbitrary. They all are.

All I'm saying is that the competitive WRs stop at the marathon. Anything beyond that is uncompetitive. So, why not run a really insane distance? At least then you are proving something unique.

If the USATF lists it as the AR, it was certified in advance.The race was hyped in advance so if anyone else wanted a shot, RNR Az would have let them. There were likely no takers. It may surprise many here, but running a solo effort for a record is actually harder than running with others (pacers, competition) and there are not many 50k races where people could go that kind of pace. So Cox is just setting it up to at least have people around for 42K of his 50K. Again, it may surprise some here, but Geb had pacemakers for 30-35k of his Marathon record attempts.

I wish JC the best in his effort. However, there are two things wrong with your comments and under the pertinent USATF Rule of Competition 262. Under that rule, an American Record can only be set in a race open to membes of at least two clubs, schools, or colleges. There is simply no evidence RNR invited anyone other than JC to run 50k, finishing on the track. There was certainly no info on its website that offered that opportunity.

Second, Rule 262 requires that there actually be at least three bona fide competitors who participate in "the event" in which the record is set. A marathon and 50k held simultaneously are two different events.

My conclusion is that USATF is looking the other way on this because JC is a golden boy and USATF is hard up for those.

I for one will be there to watch, and I'm excited.

This is not a stunt, 50k is a legitimate and respected distance in many places across the world, just as 100k and the 24 hour events are (as well as 50 and 100 miles, but those are more American based distances).

Appreciate it for what it is, and know that ultramarathon running is experiencing a period of rapid growth, we just saw the breaking of the 24-hour AR (by Scott Jurek), and I believe we will soon see AR at 50 miles and 100 miles fall within the next 10 years as well with the many young up-and-coming ultrarunners.

There are actually quite a few "young guns" in the sport, and they are blowing away course records left and right.
