Though most tracks were synthetic in the Hammond era, I don't know what surfaces they ran their sub-9's on.

Just skimming, your math on York '99 is wrong. Not sure about any others. Your placement is right, just the total time is off.

When Hauser twins at Kingwood as sophs, they ran 9:00 and 9:01 and I think the team had Lewis Jones who won Texas state x-championship as well as possibly another Texas x-country champ - He must have run about 9;10

The Eric Henry-led Woodlands team with all those guys still hold, I believe, either the 4 x 1600 or 4 x mile - he ran 8:52 and the others ran pretty fast as well.

For the record - Jesuit's times were on a dirt track.

Amherst Steele (Ohio) in the early to mid 70s had some great runners but never all together. Their best year was 1974 when they had 9:00.6, 9:24, and 9:27.5 for a 27:52.1.

Another runner graduated the year before that and ran 9:03 as a jr and 9:14 as a senior. The 9:27.5 was a freshman and went on to run 9:11.6 his senior year. He ran a 30:36 10k the summer after his soph year.

You're right, it was a typo. Should be 6.19 instead of 9.19

I only know what info is posted on the 'US HS Distance Gods' page and the OSAA State meet archives... I would imagine their 1976 team (Bill McChesney, John Gustafson, Seth Brown, et al) would be pretty far up any list...

McChesney went 8:50 for the 2m, but not sure about the others.

Another two teams to look at would be the York 05 team.

I think Macnamara ran around 8.55 with one of the Dettmen around 9.07 and the other around 9.12 or maybe it was Montgomery.

Also I remember watching the Dettmen and Montgomery run 9.10/9.12/9.13 indoors. That's gotta be up there for fastest threesome indoors if my guess is correct? Anyone know? I don't know remember what they did outdoors but I would guess all three got under 9.10. I guess you would have to throw them in there as well.

Brown was 9:06y, no idea about the others that year though.

I checked both of those York teams already... both just missed the cut (the '05 version was 27:30-27:31, the 2006 version a little further back)

no idea on the indoors thing... that's mostly a Northeast/Great Lakes area deal, so you are probably right that that is the best ever or very close to it.

Since we were talking about track times, I used their #3's track mark instead of what he ran in a time trial. If we were including XC time trials / postal race results, I'm sure this list would look different (not all the top runners on an XC team run 2 miles, and some might be slower in track than in XC for various reasons be it injury or focus).

For 2 mile to 3200m conversions, I used the flat 1.006 multiplier, rounding (up, as always) to the nearest tenth.

As per the times posted...

8:54.8y = 8:51.7c

9:07.0?y = 9:03.8c

9:21.0?y = 9:17.7c

8:51.7 + 9:03.8 + 9:17.7 = 27:13.2

531.7 + 543.8 + 557.7 = 1633.2

Hope this helped clear up the confusion.

I am most impressed with Hammond High's third fastest runner going 8:56.2. Talent for 1 or 2 runners is more common, than having 3 runners at 8:56.2 or better.

3 <9 in one year, at one school can be explained by a statistical anomaly or by a really good coach.

But I've never heard of any more exceptional teams from Hammond.

Then again, I am not from Indiana.
