These runners aren't injured. They are doing what kids do that want to get out of PE. They fake it to avoid something unpleasant. In Ritz's case, he knew things were not going to go well for him. It may not even be deliberate but psychosomatic.
Runners need to suck it up. Short of a stress fracture, you always line up. ALWAYS. If the race implodes for you like Geb in NYC, nobody is going to say you were chickensh*t.
Runners also need to race more. Doing well involves a certain amount of luck and racing more gives you more opportunity to let luck work for you instead of against you.
The difference between a niggle and an injury is balls. Pure and simple.
