Great article on Adrian Royle (albeit 30 years late)

Thanks for posting that. I'd bet heavily that that's what he had, and it's a good thing it curtailed his running career or he could well be living with it now. Post-exertional malaise is a hallmark of CFIDS as it impacts the bioenergetics of the mitochondria.

anyone know where we can find the training logs mentioned at the end of the article....i've searched and have been unsuccessful

Mon: am 15 miles slow in high winds (100mph gusts recorded in the area)

Tue: am 5 miles; pm 10 miles

Wed: am 5 miles; pm 5x1 mile w/3 minute recovery

Thu: am 5 miles pm 10 miles fast

Fri; am 5 miles; pm Fartlek 6 minutes/5 min/4 min/3 min/ 2 min/1 min

Sat: am 5 miles; pm 10 miles

Sun: am 5 miles; pm 10 miles

Week total = 105 miles

Mon: am 19 miles

Wow, that's "old school", 70s/80s training! No mention of treadmills, lactate threshold, etc...... One workout was slow due to " high winds" (100 mph gusts!!) Bad a$$ training and it paid off.

What about singles and forefoot running for mitochondrial biogenesis? Imagine how good Adrien could have been if he only knew what he was doing?

I cannot imagine training indoors on a treadmill, bore me stupid. Indoors there are no Golden Eagles to fly next to me or deer or coyotes. Ask a Kenyan or Ethiopian how they train and I bet it is pretty much the same as we all did then but they do it better;-) Running should be about the most simple thing there is to do, put one foot in front of the other quickly. No need for technology or drugs. Relax and enjoy it.

Has anybody reached a runner's high on a treadmill? I bet no.

Yes quite a few errors in the online version, a few of these were corrected for the printed version.

As for sick dates - started Oct 83, left USA April 24th 1984.

The Mt Sac 10k; Nenow ran his good one in '82, I did mine in '83. Shahanga was 2nd. I was due to defend the 5k I had won there in '82 but I saw the fields for both and decided the 10k was by far the best field!!

As for the TAC XC comments I made way back then I was extremely bored with reading in the press about how fantastic a runner Salazar was, the press needed to be shown how wrong they were. They have made the same mistake over and over again, they never learn. I don't like the behaviour of the sport press, they have damaged quite a few runners over the years with their constant attacks, instant personality analysis, total failure to get facts correct even names. The internet is a great place to reply to all that but the trouble is that the press now publish their mistakes online and those mistakes then become facts on Wikipedia and more and more school kids get F's for their schoolwork because they all copied the same rubbish from Wikipedia without double checking the facts.

I think that might have been a rant ;-) Oh well County XC Champs this weekend, I'll be out with my camera and a nasty cough and a cold.

Adrian, why did you never run for U. Nevada Reno? You transferred there after one year at College of Southern Idaho.

I had to redshirt for a year, then I won the TAC, cast some nasty aspertions on the UNR coach and left the athletics dept. I stayed in Reno though for a few more years. Loved running there and had some most excellent friends who did rodeo. With Lake Tahoe only a short drive away I really had to tear myself away, not a happy departure.

This is a really enjoyable thread. Thanks. I've never been to Reno but you've probably motivated me to make a trip there.

It has changed enormously since I left in '84. I took a wander around on Google Streetview and was amazed at the changes down town, so many new casinos etc. I did find all the old places I lived in though. Pity the cameras cannot go off road where I used to train. check out Pevine Peak to the NW of town, lots of trails there plus my one and only ever rattlesnake which I jumped over. I need to go back for a look, check out some of the great National Parks in California etc. Besides many in transit visits through Newark NJ and Miami Int Airports on my way to Latin America I haven't been to the USA since I left. So many changes but Tahoe is still where my heart is, love it still.

I run the Lasse Viren course a couple times each year. I have no idea how he ran the time he ran on it. It is a remarkable time for that course. His time on that course is far more impressive to me than his 5K or 10K Mt Sac Times.

As we're reliving your life, just out of curiosity, are there specific reasons you go to Latin America frequently or is it just because you can?

Before and after I was a runner I was a wildlife nut so with nothing better to do I had lots of birding trips to Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and above all Ecuador. Got totally hooked on insects, a man needs a hobby ;-)

The Lasse Viren course was similar to the terrain I was training on in Reno, lots of dirt trails, real running, just relax and belt one out.
