Landice is the industry leader for home treadmills right now. The machines are overbuilt with regard to the frame, rollers, flywheel and motors. The rollers are so massive, they function like additional flywheels.

I would also echo Average Joe's comment from above: if you expect 5:00 pace to be usable and repeatable, you have to spend some serious cash. No way around it.

Really appreciating the tips, all. Realizing that going beyond the $1500 or so I had figured on might save a lot of trouble in the long run.

I got a weslo cadence 450 from walmart 8 years ago for $300 and it's still working great.

If it ever goes out then I'll just get another one, or else get an elliptical.

The advantage with most elliticals is that they don't need electricity.

I presume you don't have a gym nearby?

A month of snow and ice made me appreciate my gym membership (~$90/month) more than ever. They have about 20 treadmills, half of which go to 3:00/km (72/lap,4:48) and half go substantially faster. I can actually do my reps on them in winter. Crank up the incline and 10-second all-out hill sprints are possible. There is just no way I would want the cost or hassle of repairing one of these beasts at home.

I agree with the earlier posts recommending the Landace.

I have had a Landace L8 for 12 years and it has never had a problem. I lube the board yearly. I think I paid around 4500 for it but it was worth it.

In response to keep goings treadmill tripping his circuit.

If you have a dedicated line installed that services your treadmill your problem will be fixed.

Also, make sure there are no extension cords between the treadmill and socket. Seems like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised...

I would steer clear of Nordic Track treadmills. I paid $2000 for one of their top of the line models in July, used it 10 times before it died. Nordic Track can't/won't fix it and won't give me a refund/return. Their returns department won't answer the phone or return emails. Once they get your money they don't seem to care whether or not you are satisfied with their product.

Don't just take my word for it. Google "Nordic Track complaints" and you can read other people's experiences.

I have a BodyGuard T460x at home, speed goes to 11.0 (good enough for me) and at my gym, I like the Nordic Track (not sure what style) but do agree with the other poster about the mill breaking down a lot and the speed only goes to 8.0. My gym also has Precor which goes faster than Nordic but feels like the machine is about to fall apart if you do any hill sprints on it.

I also like LifeFitness and StarTrack that I've used at various fitness centers. I think the best way to test them out is at a gym or go to a place that exclusively sells treadmills.

the technogym are the kind Geb has about 6 of in his gym in addis....25kph...i tried tapping it out once...barely made it before i had to slam the red button, too fast at 8000ft!!! nice 'mill though
