It really was corky carroll who posted that. I told him about this thread.
By the way, his website
It's nice to see him be social, he was such an introvert with the ladies (chuckle).
That guy surfing and playing basketball is far from the best surfer in the world. However, as an Olympic 1500m finalist he has a legitimate claim as being the best surfer/miler in the world. Hell, it even he looks like he can play basketball fairly well too.
Obvious choice:
My friend is going to flip when I tell him Corky Carroll actually responded to this thread. In the great tradition of surfing, that is gnarly, dude. And to bring it back full circle into running, Jeff Atkinson must be pretty good, having grown up in Manhattan Beach, and having won that competition before.
One infamous guy I thought of was David Eggers, who was a youth phenom (another letsrun theme) who got derailed by drugs and alcohol. I think he was done by about 17, but had beaten guys like Kelly Slater and Rabbit Bartholomew by that time.
If it hadn't been for that Tabu, it would've been me, hands down. Don't cry for me though, cause Mr. Hanalei taught me all of the tricks to get those Hawaiian chicks.
gravity sports like surfing are NOT athletics.
neither are ice sports, motor sports, surgical modification sports (food eating contests)
someone should pose a surf question to Carroll to get letsrun in the Outdoor section of the OC Register newspaper.
Tom Carroll???
Why? would this discussion be on letsrun.com. for everyone who posted on this never surf again.dilt
there's no athletes involved in surfing. those kind of free fall sports like bungee jumping, surfing, sky diving, etc. are not athletics.

It's funny it took 20 something posts before someone brought up his name.
I was into surfing in the mid to late 80's and Tom Carrroll and Tom Curran were two of the biggest names at the time.
As to who is the best, it's a matter of personal opinion but I think Slater makes the best highlight reels.
This should be called "Worst Thread Ever". As bad as a bunch of surfers trying to discuss running.
The answer is so subjective. Here is my answer.......Al Gore. He has been surfing the Internet for years since he invented it.
Get over yourself, prune picker. As if no other random topic has been discussed on these boards. Yes, the Aussie Tom Carroll was brilliant, and should have been mentioned right out of the gates. But Slater is the man. Coming from a miler who has craynay balangatanged a few waves in his time.
David Nuuhiwa was / is a real champion. He didn't ride the soup to the shore on every wave and ham it up for the ABC TV cameras and the knobs in the silly sport coats holding microphones.
Another prune picker.
