Which they often aren't. Track isn't football, so only the very best recruits get anything close to a full ride. Your time is probably better spent applying for academic or need-based scholarships than worrying about your athletic scholarship. You will probably get a better return on your time and worry. I run D3, but a friend of mine from my high school won the (girls) state meet in the 800 in 2:12 and she goes to a major DI school...and gets a few thousand dollars a year, including books. But she got a $5000 scholarship from a local parents' association, and that money doesn't hinge upon her athletic performance. I know many others who have gotten pretty good academic/merit-based scholarships for their schoolwork and either no or hardly any athletic money.
