The sense of entitlement is a huge problem. Our whole society is weighed down with a sense of entitlement. Proposal: remove all social safety nets for those who refuse to achieve in school. Defining "refuse to achieve" would be a tad tricky, but there's no need for society to offer any support to those who refuse to make their own contributions.

There has been a "crisis" in American education ever since there has been mandatory public schools (~100 years). We are fine. We will be fine. The kids are okay.

20% of those tested can't read and write. But people who can't read & write don't want to be tested, so the rule of thumb is 25%-30% of the US adult population are illiterate.

Racism & Segregation are the hallmarks of the 2010 US education system. Cities are broken up into mini-districts since Anglo whites want to remain segregated from others. Minority districts typically spend 1/3 to 1/5th per pupil. AP classes and the funds to hire qualified teachers to teach the classes, are the new Separate But Equal. State and Federal govts have ignored civil rights laws and allow financial segregation and racial segregation to spread like a cancer eating away at the youth of America. At the same time white police and white fire unions discriminate and hire white cops and white firemen disproportionally in minority neighborhoods.

The Asians are far outstripping the US in education. The problem in the US is the education system which is going bankrupt due to huge pensions and due to medical insurance premiums. These two items are not standard across the country, so some shool districts have sustainable budgets, while others are not stustainable.

BTW, it is Chinese areas such as Hong Kong and Singapore where the highest achievement records are being recorded. These sophisticated and wealthy Asian areas are populated by parents who value education and "demand" that their kids overachieve. The US is populated by people who value sports and Hollywood more than overachieving students. The problem in the US is a combined parental/school system problem. The schools may be breaking us financially, but at any price, they are not going to educate kids whose parents aren't involved and don't demand high achievement. The blame is shared between the parents, the kids and the school system. Take a lesson from Hong Kong, and America would change. That isn't going to happen, so we might as well import their kids to Cal Berkeley and hope that they'll stay after graduation to run this country effectively in the future.

Amen, brother! I certainly don't think this is all of the problem, but a huge amount is culture I believe, and a huge part of that is upbringing ... parents who set their kids on the right path will generally see their kids turn out better. That isn't rocket science, that's common sense.

That is only part of it, though... kids are not influenced only by their parents, but also their peers, role models and the culture that surrounds them. And the education still isn't perfect, either, as evidenced by this kind of topic. But still, a better parenting culture would yield a much improved result in my opinion.

China is a communist country with great poverty, disease, illiteracy, and repression. 80% of the people are penniless and sleep on the streets. 50% of China can't read and write. The images of the skyline of big cities show air laced with factory pollution and untreated carcinogens.

Inner City High Schools, which are the new Segregated Racial Minority Schools, typically spend much more per student than Suburban Public or Private/Parochial schools. Wasting money on Useless Administrators and 30 Year Tenured teachers waiting for a pension is how this happens. Get rid of this and allow them to throw out students who don't want to be there or are a danger to others, and the problem would be solved.

the country needs people like you, we still need the smart people to maintain the countries infrastructure, while the people who were able to get into the military, prepare to defend against any foreign or domestic enemies.

i am in the same boat as you, as i qualified easily in every test, but i was disqualified for my history of mental problems that i had before age 18, and my records were supposed to be sealed since i was under 18, they found out about it though and disqualified me. oh well.

That's not true. There is administration waste everywhere, but the budgets for minority schools districts in Apartheid cities is a fraction of white school districts. That's the purpose of apartheid cities ! Why else would Anglos segregate themselves out from others. They want the money for their own Anglo kids after all. If that wasn't happening, they would leave town, I.E. white flight, like Boston and Los Angeles in the 1970s. The use of Apartheid school districting means the Anglos don't relocate.
