I can give you my perspective.
I am born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA.
My father was a steelworker,a nd my mom stayed at home with all the children.
My father used to shake his head about his union and say " we did our share of picketing, worked overtime, and made a better life for ourseleves and for those to come in our union. But, it seems too many of these kids today are getting in these unions without paying the price like we had to, and are making demands and expecting to be treated like they have a Harvard degree."
What my father meant was, they (the older generation) did the dirty work with pickets and suffered through turmoil in the horrible days of the unions, to make things better for today. And, the members today abuse those priviliges, and come to expect them. He feels the unions were a good thing, but are now a larger reason this country is ruining itself.
Think about it. What is the largest reason the car manufacturers are hurting?
It's the hundreds of millions of dollars paid in pensions to men who retired at 50, with 8th grade educations, after working on the assembly line for 30+ years. They receive full medical, health, dental and about $80k-$120k per year pension!! It adds up...alot.
Add to this many other unions that ran factories into the ground, or forced the owner to have no other choice but to move his business overseas for cheaper labor etc.
Americans don't think. They don't want to know why that shirt cost $11, and not $36. It cost $11 because the tag says it was made in China. If it was made in America, it would cost $36. Why? Because the union wages paid to the American who made it, would drive the cost of the product up.
When is this going to end?
I see people around me with no or very little education, making demands. They made no effort to improve themselves. Yet, they expect the same treatment and wages as those that have made that effort.
This is what is killing our own country.
Having said that, I would live here over China anyday.
Ask yourself this; Do you think more Americans move to China to live or the reverse?
Excatly!
Everybody wants to come here. And do you know what they do when they get here?
Make demands.
Just like my father said.
He was a genius.
