Holidays were borrowed from Pagan traditions in order to drive mass shopping sprees and make huge sums of money.

In Public schools there is an effort to accomadate every language as completely as possible.

That is why there are ESL classes.

I just struggle with the people that try to get Christmas back in the public school classroom. These are typically the Fox News zealots: people who back intelligent design (i.e. creationism) and usually the people who point to the constitution decrying political correctness saying there is no provision for the separation of church and state. However, the First Amendment reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...", while Article VI specifies that "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States." Feel how you want about Christmas-it is inherently a religious celebration and therefore bringing it into the classroom is unconstitutional. And if you want your school to teach it so bad send your kid to a parochial school...

As a Catholic, I think Christmas is sickening.

#1 Do NOT blame the religions for Christmas becoming a tacky f***ing joke. Blame the corporations. Go to most Catholic masses and you will hear the priest asking people to give to charity instead of having elaborate Christmas mornings.

#2 I think the "Christmas" break is needed, not due to any religious significance, but b/c you need to have a break at some point, and the New Year makes for a decent opportunity to reflect and start a new year.

#3 No one claims Jesus was really born on December 25. It is well known that Catholics threw it on the Solstice to entice the heathens. You morons are not sharing any secrets.

#4 Religion is a private matter. If you want to share your religion, do it by means of love and giving. No one is counting converts, there is not an excel sheet in heaven counting how many people you convince to join the ranks. God is about love, and taking it in any other direction is a treacherous abuse. Keep it out of schools, but don't arrest people for discussing it. It is a part of culture. It can be discussed. Just like slavery, the Constitution, Sacajawea and Casimir Pulaski day.

Xmas is based on the Kenyan solstice festivals held before recorded history. Some estimate the Kenyans began the Solstice festivals 25,000 years ago.

Nonetheless, I agree with the vast majority of posters that we need to get the Christ back in Christmas and not necessarily in our schools. Having said that, a lot of the moral erosion and cultural depravity in society can be blamed on the secularists and "intellectuals" permeating the "media" and national (nationalist?) agenda.

Even if you are not a follower of Christ or see the bible as largely metaphorical as I do, he's a pretty good example of how to live your life, and there's plenty of archaelogical and historical evidence supporting his existence. Hard to say that about many other "prophets."

No. The point of ESL classes is to teach these kids English so they can be assimilated into the regular classes. You obviously know little about the American education system. The goal is to get everyone into the same environment.

It's a humorous idea that Christmas can be "stolen" by a school. Has the school done something to prevent students from going home and celebrating Christmas with their families?

Well I think it's one of those things that cant be said enough. I live in an area where I'm positive the majority thing that Dec 25th is Jesus' Birthday, hell some people actually make a Jesus Birthday Cake for Christmas. That f**king crazy.

Here's what a regular church goer (Methodist Church) thinks about Christmas:

1) Radio stations that start playing ONLY Christmas music at Thanksgiving need to be boycotted for the rest of the year. The ONLY reason they do this is to get the listeners in the mindset of Christmas and the BUYING that goes along with that, so their advertisers are happy.

2) I hate the "Christmas Season" thing. As far as I'm concerned, Christmas is one day...Dec. 25.

3) Christmas would be more awesome if it were in June or if I weren't living in Ohio for it.

4) People who want religion of any kind in the public schools need to be evaluated for possible mental disorders.

5) The song Carol of the Bells is the scariest Christmas song ever. Listen to that song and imagine scary clowns coming at you with knives. That song could easily be the theme song for a horror movie.

Actually, I liked this, only I would caveat your #1. Also, I'd like to think that some of the music gets people in the spirit of GIVING or at least getting more joy in their hearts.

But Christmas music does get old after about two days, especially when you have to hear Barely ManEnough, Gloria Estefan, and The Carpenters over and over. No one's fault but your own that you live in Ohio.

Sagarin,I agree 100% with your comments. Specifically, I agree early Christmas music DOES put many people in the spirit of giving and does put joy in their hearts. I'm just not sure the radio stations that do this have that in mind...more wanting to please advertisers I think.I also agree that it's no one's fault but my own that I live in Ohio. Central Ohio is a decent place to raise a family, and the cost of living vs. income potential here is nice, but as I've mentioned here several times, I do NOT enjoy the winters. I will retire somewhere south of here...Arizona, New Mexico, Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas...somewhere where cold winters are short and mild or non-existent.

All of the stuff in the stores, on TV, and all the commercialization has nothing to do with religion or anybody's religious beliefs, anymore than the President's Day Car Sale at Bob's Chevrolet has anything to do with patriotism. It's just an excuse to make money and sell stuff.

It's all about retail businesses trying to make money. Everyone in the US could instantly become atheists and the stores would still be pushing Black Friday sales to sell more crap.
