About 130 million people in the word have an IQ higher than mine, kind of makes me feel stoopid.

What test did you take to determine that your IQ is 150? We've got at least 5 geniuses that have posted on this thread so far, and most of them are well above the genius range (142) supposedly. I smell a rat.

I think that the Letsrun crowd, although obnoxious (me included) is smarter than the general population. It's only reasonable that a few of us would be expected to be very tall or very smart, etc. Don't get mad.

(Oh, and "exceeding one standard deviation" doesn't even put one in the top 10% - I don't know how "noble" that is.)

Hey, guess what? Some HAS to have an IQ of 167, and you don't think there's gonna be a lot of response bias?

Hypothetically, would you believe my LSAT score is over 3 standard deviations above the mean? That's a lot harder to get an "average score" on than an IQ test, especially if you don't really study for it.

It does depend a bit on what IQ test you use- some have SD of 15, others have SD of 16.

Like a lot of people, I've taken online IQ tests and scored consistently in 140s. . . yay! I'm a jeenyuss!

But seriously, a thread that asks for people with high IQs to respond is probably going to attract a disproportionate amount of high IQ responders. Also, if you figure letsrun gets about 1000 unique hits a day, wouldn't you expect there to be 5 guys in the 99.5th percentile? That's assuming, too, that letsrun isn't smarter than a random sampling of bums. I think there's a population bias here toward college graduates, which would tend to skew the numbers even more.

Hell, I forget the guy's name, but isn't there a regular poster here who has an advanced degree from MIT or Caltech? I'd expect his IQ to be pretty high. Sagarin might be a little gloom and doom about America, but he has all kinds of fancy math education and I'd be surprised if he didn't have an above average IQ. That's 2 of the predicted 5 right there, not even counting smart lurkers who aren't well known.

Point taken, but I suppose what I'm trying to say is that it's useless to post threads about IQ because it ends up being a pissing contest between people whose egos are so big it probably hurts rather than helps them. Plus, you have to admit you're going to get a few people who will twist the truth or flat out lie, what with this being an anonymous message board and all. It sickens me to see intelligent people on here using big words and puffing up their ego as if they were actually helping someone or contributing positively to a meaningful discussion. The truth is, IQ is pretty much useless to discuss, unless you are just desperate for people to know how smart you are. That's absolutely the only reason anyone would post on a thread like this.

IQ 4-5 points lower than this site predicts from my SAT score.

One problem with this whole thing is that IQ is not something for which there is an agreed upon definition, let alone a meaningful way to measure it.

I can tell you my SAT score (I may or may not be lying, but at least it is likely that I took an SAT and the score is no more and no less than what it claims to be - an SAT score). But IQ? What does this mean? What is the acceptable measurement method? And the ego aspect associated with "IQ" is problematic.

Or they were really board on a day that they didn't feel like getting back to work and letsrun had momentarily failed to produce any interesting threads.

Honestly, an anonymous message board would be the only place I would purposely talk about my own IQ, because stating what I honestly believe about it makes me seem very pretentious. This is actually kind of funny, because my 800 time is rarer than what I derived for my IQ, but nobody thinks I'm an arrogant ass when I tell them my PR. Evidently people (sadly) tie intelligence directly to their self-worth. I wasn't lying or exaggerating, though.

Only folks who scored well on school IQ tests knew they scored well. They usually got some special attention from the teachers, changed path of study or at minimum a parent teacher meeting informing Mom her Bubala was as special as she thought.

Remenber IQ was set up to find and define the learning challenged not glorify the other end of the beast.

I agree IQ conversations do draw those who know they scored well if only because they know their IQs.

Your doctor does a routine blood test an pronounces you normal do you ask him "exactly how normal are my tests?" but if he says your philopenation rate is high you ask "How high?" and learn about the ramifications of high philopenation rates.
