It's not really comparable - he fled the US after having pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, but before sentencing. Presumably the sentence would have involved jail time if it had been given.
The issues around his case are more about how extradition works between various countries.
Some people on this forum are giving M Jones the benefit of doubt here which they shouldn't.
I reckin as a kid she never admitted when she did anything wrong out of fear of getting in trouble and now she can't and won't grow out of it
It's quite clear to me that she has not taken full responsibility for her actions.
She is bitter that she went to jail. She made an assumption that she would not go to jail and she was shocked when she was told you're going to jail.*
It was the same thought process when she was taking illegal drugs and telling the media that she was clean. She thought that she wouldn't be caught and then she was caught.* Surprise.....I'm starting to see a trend her....
In her head, she lives by different rules than everybody else. In her head, it's ok to cheat because she won't get caught, everybody loves her and also she felt that it didn't affect anybody else.....until people had proof that it was going on and then she had to admit it......but at the same time she can't accept that people have a problem with it.....or that people won't give her a second chance

She will never ever admit in her head that she did anything wrong.....she will continue to play the blame game....the no father story, the no guidance, the drugs being put in her food etc.

Exactly. After Martha Stewart traded on an insider stock tip, all she would have had to do when she first got caught was admit she made the mistake, pay a fine, walk away--happens all the time. But instead, Martha lied to the SEC when asked about it. Result: jail time (obstruction of justice/perjury--same thing). You don't need to talk to the cops/IRS/SEC/AG when they call, you can exercise your right to refuse to talk--but if you agree to talk and lie, you go to jail.

I am no fan of DC, nor of hunters, but you do realize that hunters shoot themselves and each other all the time. Sometimes they are drunk and sometimes not. I live in Michigan and this kind of accident happens EVERY year. Thankfully people don't always die, but as far as I know, people who make this kind of shooting mistake are not prosecuted for murder or manslaughter.
The way I see it, if you are friends with Dick Cheney and you hang around him while he is drinking and carrying a hunting rifle, you are taking a chance every minute. I feel the same about anyone else who puts themselves in that situation with any hunter.
You make yourself look stupid by comparing being convicted for perjury to a hunting accident. No matter how famous or disliked the people involved are.

What about Barry Bonds? Didn't he do exactly the same thing (perjury) as Jones?
But his trial has been suspended "indefinitely" and he'll get off, right?
And what about Roger Clemens lying before Congress? Will he get jail time or get off on probation?
And Miguel Tejada got probation and a fine if I remember correctly for lying under oath.
I am also not a Marion fan, but saw her run in HS and she was an incredible talent. I think she was treated harshly, considering that all of these other high profile athletes also lied under oath and got off.

All dopers should be subject to criminal law as they are committing fraud
Who cares WHAT Marion Jones thinks about penal sanctions.
Does she understand concepts like punishment, rehabilitation, restitution, specific deterrence, general deterrence?

Has she meaningfully examined the justice system, both in its current form and its historical basis?

Does she really have anything intelligent to bring to the discussion?

Clemens and Bonds are accused of doing the same, and as you note, they currently are being prosecuted for it. Their trials are not done yet. We'll see what happens. With Tejada it was not like they did not care abut the perjury, they went after him for lying, but you're correct that he got off lighter than MJ. Per Wikipedia: "Tejada pleaded guilty to charges that he lied to Congress in 2005. . .He faced up to one year in federal prison and deportation. . . He received a one year probation"So I stand by the point that when people ask "why did MJ go to jail for taking PEDs that lots of others did," the point is that it was the perjury that was the problem. You're right that some might get off without jail for it, but many of them have been threaten with it. _____________________________
