IAAF scoring tables has 28:23 equivalent to an 8:29.77 two mile and McMillan calculator puts it at 8:25. So when Lukas breaks 8:35 for two miles we can start talking. Until then, he is nowhere near this guy and you need to stop your high school stud worshiping.

Japanese 1st choice is to go to one the 5 Imperial Us. Taiwanese and South Korean student's 1st choice is to go their their former Japanese Imperial U. Indians who can't get into IIT will settle for Stanford, MIT, etc. If they can't get into college. Kids don't want to leave home but will if they can't go to their college of choice. China differs in that students equally want to go to a Japanese U because of the enormous relationship China has with Japan, like every town in China has a Japanese factory, and a major hydro dam, power plant, hospital, bridge, electric grid, etc. I'm Chinese and both my parents went to university in Japan,

While I agree to some extent, I think you oversimplify. Japanese kids still do pretty well in international math, science, and computer programming competitions. That requires the ability to solve problems independently. The engineers designing products for companies like Toyota, Sony, and Nintendo obviously learned something in school, so they weren't all spending their college days and nights getting wasted in the izakayas.

And they start college far ahead of US kids when it comes to math and science. My wife's nephew came to the US, when he was 16. He naturally had a tough time with the courses that required strong verbal skills in English, but he found the math courses childishly simple.
