The skills that make a good ski racer are totally different than running.
Nordic is your bet bet. It should take you minimum 5 years just to get solid technique.
I used to board a LOT but gave it up to focus more on running as I can run from my front door and it doesn't cost a fortune to participate in (like skiing/boarding does). I still go probably once or twice a season but now I take snowshoes and snowshoe for the morning then head over to the slope for an afternoon of boarding. Snowshoeing is a fricking great workout and translates to running quite well. Not so much the boarding. Plus snowshoeing means you are absolutely alone in the solitude of the woods. Nothing better than shoeing when it's snowing out. So quiet out there. For some reason XC skiing and shoeing are not popular at all where I go (Kirkwood near Lake Tahoe). You can also take your snowshoes to National Parks and run the trails in the winter, again, no people around.
Nothing better than backcountry touring and ski mountaineering. I run lots of miles Mon-Fri, and ski on the weekends during the winter/spring months. Cranking out 5-8 thousand vertical foot days is an awesome aerobic workout, and skiing back down is a lot more fun than running! Dynafits are the way to go, hands down.

Thanks. I'll be doing it in the French Alps.

Skiing looks like something you could do well into your older years. I did wakeboard when I was younger during the summers for about 4 years. That leads me to believe snowboarding would be easier for me to pick up. I must admit, it also looks like more fun, if you can do the tricks.
Like I said, I'm biased, but skiing tricks have way more variety than snowboarding tricks.

Skydiving is amazing, though. I saw you mentioned that in your first post. Go skydiving. If you want to you can get into competative sexual endeavors.

Don't know her, but I have met Ward. Pretty sure that is Melanie Curtis who is filming them (certainly looks like her jump suit). I've jumped with her.
