People do what they want to do in life and when they want to do it. Not sure why you even think about this, who cares what other people do? If they want to compete and run their hardest or run for fun, that's what they want to do. Why do you over-analyze what people want to do, is that a hobby? Your insecurity is showing, grow up.
If 16:30 - 17:00 people shouldn't be running that basically means that women shouldn't run.

Hey homie check out the results for this year and I am by far #1 in my "house". And if I have to have my guy take the pipe to his OTHER knee next year I will be World Champion for sure.

First of all, not only do you look "retarded," but you do to those both faster than you AND slower than you. To a world elite, a Bekele or Kipchoge etc, your 14:40 is a joke they can run more comfortably (and look better doing it) than you could EVER run 16:40. And most elites would be far more gracious than you.
Then, to us 16:50 guys, you are a joke for being a pathetic sniveling little quitter. At the end of the day, it's no surprise you never really took your running anywhere serious. I started running with a 19:30 at 28 and have come down from that by working at it every day - being a runner. If you're not doing that, you're a spectator and not a runner, and I guarantee the elites I've met have more respect for a 16:50 still-traing still-improving father with a career than a washed up never-was calling names from the stands.

I've had this same conversation with a few of my college friends. You know when you were at the highest level (D1) and competing against the best in the nation it's hard to get back into it. We put so much effort in achieving our goals, and made many sacrifices to be great, and the great thing about it was that you had about 6-7 guys who was willing to make the same sacrifices, so it made it so much easier. You will never find that anywhere in the nation unless you join an elite club team. It's simply impossible to do it by yourself and be mentally sane! Out of my close friends from college only 1 of us still competes seriously and is a professional runner. The rest of us won't even think about competing seriously again or running a race.
Knowing that you will never be the athlete you once were makes you not want to compete. It's a sad reality, but it just doesn't satisfy you like it once did. Plus when it's 10 degrees out and snowing and Windy; I don't feel bad if I stay inside.

Some body types aren't going to run 14:59, or even 17:00. A former football lineman who's trying to stay in shape would score a coup if he could run 17:00.
And yes, there are some parts of the country where 17:00 will win 5ks...even slower would win them.
Did anyone else see the title of this thread and think that it was about a Japanese runner that was unsatisfied with his corporate team?
correction - there are MANY areas of the country where 17mins could win a local 5k. it's mainly the big cities with strong running communities where it gets harder for a 17min guy to find a dinky little 5k where no one faster shows up.

but what you did is a completely different sport than road racing is today and was eventually going to end.
