Somehow the point for an elite marathoner, to try and win or at least contrend for the win, seems to have been lost on most people here.
I'm a big admirer of Davila, but she was never in contention, Shalane was, and that's what matters.

As someone who knows all three women fairly well, I will tell you flat out that Shalane is the superior athlete and runner.
She will always be the best among those three, no matter who is coaching.
Shalane just has another level.

why did she pick Chicago instead?
Because Hansons have had a positive relationship with Pinkowski for the last decade.
Shalane is the greatest. Because she runs for Nike. I love Nike. I love Kara too. She has the greatest coach ever. Did you know that Nike has a building named after him? If you are cool you would know that Nike has the best athletes ever. Marion Jones ran for Nike. Regina Jacobs ran for Nike. Mary Slaney ran for Nike. The list is endless. Go Shalane. Go Kara. Go Nike.
if Shalene is so much much better and was going for the win since that is what you all have to say, then why would you let the race go out so slow for 21 miles and let a bunch of no ones be in the race with 5 miles to go. If she was training for a 2:26 why didnt she make a move after the half so we could see what she really is and take the others out of the race, Dumb move by her and her coach to let it go so slow. If Shalene is so great then where is the times to prove it in the marathon. Last time I checked it dint matter where the world record was set at in the marathon, but Geb is still considered the best out there. We are in a sport when time counts and until Shalene can run something faster than 2:26:20 or faster then best in the country she is still 2nd best. So stop buttering yourselves up in the Nike/Shalene sauce. Btw what happened to the rest of Shaumachers group? Thats right one DNF and the other who was suppose to run 2:09 ran 2:15
Actually Magdalena is number two in 2010.

Hopefully, she will prove herself and run a marathon this spring. I would hate to see her duck the competition again. Either win Boston or now that she has a marathon under her belt go heads up in London against Shobukova.
My prediction. Kara and Desiree go heads up in Boston and Shalane runs and hides and skips the marathon for all of 2011.
I'm just glad we FINALLY have a batch of fast women under 2:30!
They're all great in my book and until they race each other on the same day, all of this arguing is pretty pointless.
I agree. The main point is we have the strongest group of American female marathoners we have ever had. At the 2012 trials we will have 4 of the 5 fastest American female Marathoner of all time and that does not even include Shalane. It will be an incredibly exciting women's trials in Houston.
"lunar elite," I'm not sure what's more disturbing, your illogic or your illiteracy. Shalane came in a close second in her debut marathon against a strong field, and you're saying it's a "dumb move by her and her coach to let it go so slow?" You also managae to contradict yor own self.
if she is so much better why would you allow others to be in a race with 5 miles to go, there was almost 10 of them there at that point. Nothing against Katie M but she is not at the same level as shalene so why should she be a factor into the race at that point along with some others. My point is if she is so great why not go with your actual race plan than let others decide on what your going to run. She had made the point the whole time she was training for 2:26 big difference then running 5:55 pace for the first 21 miles. IF shes the best then she would have run that pace. Maybe she cant handle a real race, did you not see here afterwards she was done and someone at her level trains close to that pace on a daily base. Get off your high horse and accept the fact that both Desiree and Magda ran faster than Shalene has. I will put money that Desiree beats her if she even toes the line at the trials
Has the pay for time not place paradigm at NYC changed? If so when did it change?

Among Americans, Shalane Flanagan had an encouraging debut at the ING New York City Marathon, but her 2:28:40 for second place is way slower than Desiree Davila’s 2:26:20 at Chicago and Magdalena Lewy Boulet’s 2:26:22 at Rotterdam in Apri...l. That’s something that was unmentioned in the Flanagan frenzy at New York. Since it has been almost overlooked, let me blazon it from the Empire State Building to the Sears Tower: The fastest U.S. woman marathoner of 2010 is Desi Davila. The quiet Hanson-Brooks formula keeps working.
I have a question for all of you. Which would you rather do: 1) run 2:26:20 in Chicago, never contend with the leaders, finish 4th and 5:55 behind the winner or 2) run 2:28:40 in NY, contend for the win over the final miles, and finish 2nd.
I think 99% of you are going to pick #2. The beauty of the marathon is that time is not everything. Desiree ran great but statistics can be misleading.
Do not count our own jaguar1 out of the trials mix. Over the next two years I belive she will get into the sub 2:28 range and given the mentioned womens race style that is enough to get a National Uniform in a perfect racers race.
who do you think will have the best marahon time at the end of their career beween those 3? i say
1. flanagan 2:19
2. davilla 2:24
3. boulet 2:26
Well kids, the beauty of this sport is that we will find out. No teammates to hide behind, no refs to blame. Flanny and Davila will line up and go at it in Houston (and probably a number of times after that). Until then, save your breath.
yeah, that's right gimmeabreak....she has great genes, runs simply awesome since who knows when....American record holder...and she can only manage 228.....yeah, yeah yeah, her first (big deal) ...all the hype....she's following the money (not a good idea for the task at hand)....she is NOT a marathon runner...yet!
HiWiT!
I'm with you on that one...YES!! INDEEDIE!! jaguar1...will open quite a few eyes.
Why don't you ask the other runners in NYC, who included the defending champion, the LA Marathon champ, and the world 25k recordholder, why THEY didn't take it out harder. Shalane in fact DID adhere to the race plan; Schumacher was adamant about her not taking the lead in the first 20 miles.
If you want to bet on Desi to beat Shalane, be my guest. You'd lose.
The words you are disagreeing with are those of Roger Robinson. This man is pretty accomplished.
