Why can't they be civilized human beings and just speak English? (Or at least semi-civilized human beings and speak American).
I've always wondered why the French get a bad rap. I know most Americans don't know squat about history, but here's a tidbit: The French supplied money and tons of ammunition to U.S. troops to fight the Brits.
If it wasn't for the French, we'd be speaking with English accents right now, or scraping out an existence in Liverpool. That's usually lost on the highly emotional people who order "Freedom Fries."
I kind of like the U.S. and am glad my home country isn't England, perhaps the nutjobs would rather live over there.

Don't make it sound like they were doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.
They did it to make money....and that's all.

I honestly can't tell -- is this satire? Are you really boasting about how you're way too busy with your important work to worry about silly things like retirement and healthcare, as if that's something to be proud of?
There's certainly a valuable debate to be had about the economic and social implications of short work weeks, long vacations and early retirement. Maybe the downsides of lower productivity outweigh the benefits of having more personal time, as most Americans would argue. Or maybe they don't. But to think there's something implicitly bad about having time to enjoy yourself -- and to "hate" those who have it -- seems pretty messed up to me.

the fact is, france has the best health care and pension system in the world while posting consistent growth that shames more "developed" nations. protesting citizens are just greedy. period.
despite the protests, elected officials are willing to risk re-election to do what is right for the future prosperity of the country.
can american politicians do the same? will voters put someone in who will raise taxes and cut entitlements? can such a person get re-elected without being owned by corporations?
what you are witnessing is not a reason to hate the french. its a reason to envy them and be ashamed to be american

This is why (in a free society) you get your finances in order and save enough money to retire when you want to, not when the government tells you you can. The US could raise the retirement age to 120 and it wouldn't affect me. I'm retiring when I feel like it, and that will be BEFORE the earliest "retirement age" for me of 62.

I don't lose any money when the market drops unless I sell.Also, I've invested so much that my conservative prediction if I retire at age 60 (which is latest I plan to retire) is that my income from investments when taking just 4% annually will be MORE than 2 times my current annual salary. I will NOT make more than 2 times my current annual salary in the next 16 years, so that is more than is suggested. IF I decide to retire in 11 years instead (age 55) then my conservative prediction gives me about 1.5 my current income when taking 4%, which is possible I will make by then. My decision then will be based on whether I'm enjoying working then, whether my wife has a job then that she wants to keep (she does that and it's a done deal...I'm retiring), and what the current state of the economy is.I will take Social Security if it's still there (and I believe it will be, just maybe at a 70% benefit from what they say now), but I should be fine without it.

The problem with the french is the same as with us. Government programs are great, early retirement and health care and everything, but they are bankrupting both countries, and no one wants to pay for it.
The problem is worse in France because they are all given short work weeks and long vacations, spending more money and reducing productivity. There is nothing wrong with short work weeks, I would love 35 hours a week, I just can't afford it, neither can the French apparently.
The French love to strike and riot; one sees it all the time.
